Maphala Felicia molatelo
36608246
Who is Irish
Group 7
The plot
1.exposion
At the beginning of the story Gish Jen narrates that in her culture China mixed children are supposed to be smart, she believes her granddaughter sophie is smart but she says the problem is that she is wild unlike her mother Natalie or her grandmother. Also it was revealed that Gish Jen's husband was afraid of her even the busboys and cooks were scared of her because she was too fierce. She narrates that since her daughter is married to the Shea family the Irish as she regards them, she believes that Chinese people beat the Irish when it comes to hard work on the rail road. Natalie didn't like it when her mother used the Irish word

RISING ACTION
GIsh Jen mentioned that John is unemployed and ironically four brothers in the family and not even one is working and that is an interesting fact and they stay with their mother who got sick while working and had to retire. Gish Jen compares her daughter's in laws with her progress with her husband as Chinese in America. She does not understand her son in law mainly because he has no job and cannot take care of Natalie and Sophie. She refers to him as plain boiled thinking even his name is plain boiled using sarcasm. Gish Jen believed Sophie's Chinese side is being swallowed by her wild Shea side because they one had went to a park together when Sophie took off all her clothes in public and threw them in the fountain and laughed like a crazy person and Natalie seemed to have no problem with her doing that and her grandmother suggested spanking her and Natalie refused because she believed you can talk with a child not spank them.

CLIMAX
Gish Jen would deny Sophie snack, lunch, no park if she took off her clothes and as stubborn she was she would go six hours without eating anything and when her mother comes back she would cry about being hungry all the time. Sophie continued taking off her clothes until one day her grandmother spanked her not too hard but she cried and cried. One day she eventually stopped taking off her clothes and they went to the park and she behaved like a nice Chinese girl. One day bigger trouble came when Sophie hid in the foxhole with a shovel full of sand and threw it at her grandmother on her clean nice clothes, when she was called out to apologize she refused and stayed in the fox hole and literally yelled "I hate you meanie" it got late and her grandmother left her alone at the park because she refused to come out of the foxhole, she used a stick to chase her out once or twice n hit her but she did not come out, she left her granddaughter there.

FALLING ACTION
it was during dinner time when she was worried and went back to the park, she called out her name and still there was no answer, she poked and poked with a stick and when she poked harder Natalie and John appeared. Natalie called her mom crazy yet John seemed to be calm and not asking questions like Natalie he actually had answers, Sophie was found to have fell asleep in the deep hole and she started crying and crying and seemed scared according to John and she had bruises all over her brown skin. Gish Jen was called crazy and kicked out of the house because she used a stick instead of words.

RESOLUTION
Ness who is Natalie's mother in law made Gish Jen an offer to move in with her family and she agreed because she had nowhere to go or she could do with some company. When Natalie visits she no longer bring Sophie with her. John lost his job again and he was referred to as a depressed husband. Although they could not afford a nanny rather than asking for the grandmother's help they hire a younger baby sitter who can run around with Sophie. At this point she no longer uses the word Irish because she has become a honorary Irish herself and Bess likes to tease her and calls her Irish and she responds by saying who is Irish?
