Historia de lo oculto is an Argentine thriller film directed by Cristian Ponce, released in 2020 as his debut film. The story is apparently set in Argentina in the 80s, where a group of journalists who work on a nighttime talk show, will seek to solve the mystery that gave rise to it during its last hour on the air. Although the plot may sound somewhat simple, the soul of tje movie appears when it's mentioned that this mistery accuses the president of the nation of using black magic to win the elections.

Below I will analyze the film based on my tastes and personal opinion, rather than technical aspects.

To begin with one of the most notable aspects of the film is its black and white aesthetic, since it facilites the differenciation between real and hallucinogenic experiences (which include the color red, breaking with the palette), also adding a certain immersion, feeling like something foreign or out of place.

Another positive and negative aspect, almost in equal parts, is the way in which the story tells the events, seeking for the viewer to connect and interpret them freely. This can be confusing at first, since the film begins without giving an explanation regaiding what is happening, in addition to concludin with an open ending. Despite everything, being able to see the small details hidden in the scenes make it easier to understand this work; like the sound of waves, present in the ritual that the protagonist do when they are trying to connect with the spiritual world, and which is reproduced at the end of the footage; the commercials played during the program's breaks, the first abour the Falkland Islands as a national treasure (suggesting that the film is set in an alternative reality, since Argentina lost it in 1982) and the second positing children as the source of energy for this world (appreciation which makes more sence when you take into account that all politicians initiated into witchcraft have a missing son of whom they cant remember). Still, I think there are pieces that remain to fit together, like why does María, after taking the drug, not remember the year she graduated? Why did everyone forget Eduardo Alonso?
