Brooke & Kobe
2/16/17
The outbreak dates started on April 13th to April 18th in smithville.
1) final hypothesis: carl Barnett's stomach started hurting on the 14th when he was at the school. When he went home he had to go to the bathroom 3-4 times within an hour. They found blood on his stool in the kitchen, they knew something was wrong so they rushed to the hospital. Carl was exposed to raw meat and he had ground beef. He was also exposed to animal feces. His dog had an accident in the house and he was exposed to horse and goat feces too. He was also in contact with a pond that has animal feces in it. The exposure from raw meat and animal feces is what cause the illness. He doesn't have results yet.
Daniel Downy was driving home from school and his stomach was hurting really bad and he couldn't make it home on time to go to the bathroom so he had an accident in his car. He had ground beef and he was exposed to human feces changing his child's diaper and animal feces from cleaning up his dogs feces in the house. This may have cause the illness. He has no results yet.
Joe Brown has had diarrhea and it was also bloody. He has a fever and he was diagnosed with HUS. That has cause the illness. His results are pending.
2) final case definition: it lists the clinical criteria by which public health professionals determine whether a persons illness is included as a case in an outbreak investigation. That is whether a person is considered directly affected by an outbreak.
3) summary of outbreak: E. Coli is bacteria that lives in the intestines of animals and humans. It can cause illness. You can get diarrhea, pneumonia and fevers. All of these patients got ill because of being exposed to animal and human feces.
4) how it was controlled: we had to control people and see what they do with the animals.
5) what did you do to not make it happen again: we made a list of rules to follow. Wash utensils always wash hands stay away from animal feces. And always wash your hands after handling animal feces.
