The article is pertinent because it talks about how the purpose of the dam is to create “economic growth” for the villagers who live along the Mekong river. China’s “foreign investment” will gain them great profit and the locals lower Mekong countries will lose their source of nutrition. This reminded me of the term insulate because the river’s goods are only for the locals. Also, it reminded me of Frank’s dependency theory that rich countries take advantage of poor countries. This article reminds me of Gidden Lecture video where he states, “the power of the U.S is shrinking rather than growing we need other countries” therefore, economic liberalization is required in the global economy. In other words, when the demand of exported goods is low the GDP decreases because there is no business investment spending. France has invested a half-billion dollars and people of color that are low-income fear that they will never get to rebuilt their property. This article connects to chapter five “Globalization as Development” by McMichael which states “projects of development bring political intervention” (p.112). The French government had a campaign about how dangerous it was to rebuilt in areas that are victims of natural disasters. This article reminds me of the Maquilapolis film as both in the meat industry and industrial workers are seen as commodities. This shows that their economy has benefitted from migration and remittances. This will allow poverty and child labor to decrease as health, education, and technology will increase. Since FASA is not offering much to middle class students they are having to look for financial help from a for-profit sector. The expected family contribution is not a good estimation that FASA has provided. Families are accepting student loans from banks therefore, banks are doubling their money with interest. Financial aid packages are not enough for students which puts them in debt. This reminded me that these services are increasing therefore, financial capitalism has gone up too.
