He has delusions of grandeur, and when things don’t go his way, he is stuck to simply deal with mundane rivets and accountants.
Man vs. Man - Race plays a big role in determining one’s success in the jungle. The bigotry and torture prevelant exemplies the conflict of civilization and the uncivilized. Those two types of people are pitted against each other as they work towards their own ideas.
Man vs. Nature - The jungle is an unforgiving domain, and Marlow struggles to cope with the isolation. Everything happens in a vacuum, away from modern civilization or morals. The motif of Light and the motif of Darkness. This idea of contrast between the two colors, is represented literally by the characters within the novella. Throughout the novel we see how race plays a big role. Likewise just as there is a big contrast between the colors, there is a big contrast between the people of different skin colors. As people of darker skin color were looked down upon in comparison to those of white skin color. Perception vs. Actuality 

Interior vs Exterior
Marlow only sees the surface of both the people and the country of Africa because he fails to see the individuality and does not communicate with the people. The blindfold is symbolic of humanity's ignorance and the half lit face shows that humanity does not know all the knowledge yet, but Mr. Kurtz is bringing more to people.

Another symbol is that of the flies. The soldiers are said to march into the town like a swarm of flies. Flies are most always a sign of plague or death, and by comparing the soldiers to flies, it is easy to see that the soldiers are the bearers of death for the people.

Lastly, rivers symbolize the lack of mixing of races. the white men are able to enter Africa from the congo river, meaning they don't have to cross land and mix with the natives. Once Marlow got to Africa his boat was broken and the natives/people there did not allow him to fix it/move on. This shows how bad the company is organized.

Kurtz is introduced as a powerful man, yet he is not present. He will most likely become a very critical charachter since he already is an essential charachter of the plot even though he is not physically there.

Eldorado is a seccond expedition group that is pretty shady that was introduced right at the end of section one. This will be a critical group because as said on the board "nothing happens by accident."
