I grew up surrounded by children because my mom owns a daycare that is in my child hood home. As I got older, helping the kids with homework and mentoring them felt like second nature to me. It pushed me to become a coach which ultimately led me to pursue teaching.

Personal Experiences: My approach to education changed during this semester working with my master teacher. His approach is different than I have experienced but also falls in line to some degree about what we are learning. He engages his students with thoughtful questions, points out his and the students biases, and even has multiple approaches to how students can complete assignments. Overall this has been a great experience and I am trying to model myself based on his style.

A professional goal of mine as an ELA teacher is to work towards creating and writing curriculum that enhances students' literacy skills while fostering critical thinking and creativity. I always seen people struggle in math or say that it is too hard. I want to become a math teacher to make it easier for people to understand the importance of it. Another reason is after graduation, my math teacher told me that I should get my masters in education and teach math. He was a role model for me and inspired me to continue my education path.

One personal experience that has significantly influenced my approach to education was a math teacher I had. I still think she is the worst teacher I ever had. She was mean and condescending; she called on people a lot and wouldn't let it go if you didn't know the answer. She would just be like "What do you mean you don't know?" It was legitimately traumatizing for me. She also had us take a test (a test that I had to make up after school because I was absent) and then never graded it and did not put it in the gradebook. If I asked her a question she made me feel stupid; she also put three questions on the test that we only did one time in class and never for homework so I got a bad grade. Basically I don't want to be anything like her. I want to be respectful and encouraging to students when they need help or don't know an answer and I don't want to waste their time.

My high school AP bio class was very memorable for me since we worked in science groups to do most things, from problem solving worksheets to labs. The labs were also very formative for me and are generally the way I remember what I learned in that class best. I saw that experience reflected in my fieldwork class as students did a lab and fully understood the process of science in a way that will stick with them.

After I have at least a few years of experience in teaching, I would like to obtain my doctorate of education in curriculum and instruction. I want to work district-level and help train teachers and staff at a district on new curriculum goals, platforms, and standards for our students. I want to work alongside publishing companies to help students understand what they're learning and thrive within the classroom.

When I was in school, English was my least favorite subject. I did enjoy reading. However, that enjoyment went out the window the minute a book was assigned for me to read. As I've gone through life, I've rekindled my enjoyment for reading and have a new found appreciation for the potential a good ELA course can have. This along with my experience substitute teaching has significantly impacted my decision to switch over to a teaching career. I want to be the English teacher that makes reading and learning enjoyable because I ,too, once dreaded having to read Animal Farm.

A personal experience that has significantly influenced my approach to education is related to my time working in Emergency medical Services. I realized the emotional psychological components to students that I had not realized had I not worked in that field. There was many times, I needed to respond to students having mental breakdowns. This has created an insight for me related to understanding the stress and emotional aspect of students. I can use this experience to become a teacher who is aware of students lives and how to make the classroom less stressful.
