They were Athena, Tiresias, and Circe.

While in the Land of the Dead, Tiresias warns Odysseus that during his journey he will "find the grazing herds of Helios [and to] avoid those kine" (Homer lines 641-643). Tiresias helps Odysseus by warning him not to eat the cattle or he will further upset the gods.

During the Cyclops episode, Odysseus prays to Athena to help him escape Polyphemus. That evening Athena responds to his request by having all of Polyphemus' "...rams...[enter] the cave" (Homer Lines 286). Athena helps Odysseus by sending all of Polyphemus's sheep into the cave giving Odysseus and his men a ride to freedom.

Circe helps mentor Odysseus before he encounters the Sirens when she "reveals his course to him and gives advice on how to avoid the dangers he will face" (Homer page 580).

While reading the story of Odysseus, I learned he is an epic hero. He shows many heroic traits such as leadership, intelligence, and courage.
First, he demonstrates intelligence in the Cyclops episode when he offers Polyphemus “...some wine. Here’s liquor to wash down your scraps of men” (Homer lines 297-299). Odysseus tricks Polyphemus into getting drunk so while he’s sleeping they “...drove my big hand spike deep in the embers” (Homer lines 323-324). Thanks to the intelligence of Odysseus, they ended up escaping the Cyclops.

Additionally, Odyssey shows leadership in Scylla and Charybdis when he is cheering on his men “Heads up, lads! We must take the orders as I give them” (Homer lines 771-772). Odysseus is strongly leading his men and cheering them on while doing so.

Lastly, he demonstrates courage when fighting the Suitors saying “Run then, while I hold them off with arrows as long as the arrows last” (Homer lines 1513-1515). Odysseus is willing to fight and make sure his son stays safe in the process, showing courage by being willing to risk his own life. Overall, Odysseus shows many heroic traits throughout his journey and is an epic hero for them.
