This commercial uses humor and sarcasm to relate to the consumer. They want to consumer to see the healthiness of avocado's by acting like its a secret. This peaks the viewers curiosity in a good way. The reason it's one of m favorite's though is it was the first time I ever heard the "Avocado's from Mexico" jingle and it has been stuck in my head ever since.

For this week I chose the brand Woof Washer. This brand makes a product that is supposed to be designed to make giving your dog a bath become a breeze. To me the product looks more like a toy. They even use a digital representation to show how much coverage their product provides. Albeit you have to have a well trained dog that isn't going to shake or try to run away. Surprisingly this brand has actually done well for itself. Maybe not so surprising though, when considering how much consumers have increased their spending on pets.

For this week I chose a Yeti commercial that is specifically targeting the outdoorsy consumer. They start the commercial with a man flying in a small plane to a remote hunting location. The voice then begins to list some common ideas that their target consumer may have such as "For those who find the comforts of home extremely uncomfortable". Their target audience favors product that are durable and long lasting and that is the point of this commercial. To convince the viewer that there product is the most durable and longest lasting of its kind. I think this ad is extremely effective for their target audience but in a way also alienates those who don't of themselves as the outdoorsy type.

This week we were tasked with finding an interesting Superbowl commercial. I immediately thought of the series of ads Tide ran during the Superbowl claiming to basically have a stake in every commercial ever made. It starts off looking like it's going to be a typical car commercial then goes to a style of beer commercial we have all seen before, and their statement is that if the people are wearing clean clothes in the commercial it's because they washed them using Tide. This is a completely new position to take on a laundry detergent commercial and therefore stirred quite a bit of buzz following the Superbowl. I think that was the exact intention of the commercial, to cause a buzz, and they succeeded.

For this week I chose an Oreo commercial produced for Thailand. I think this commercial is the perfect example of visual Esperanto because even though I can't understand the commercial, I easily get the pleasure and happiness Oreo is trying to portray. It doesn't use words, rather strong body language signs to convey to their message to the viewer. A simple smile is something almost all cultures recognize as happiness and has a lot to do with why this commercial was so successful.

This magazine ad portrays what I think is an affective message. Most people think negatively about winter, especially when it involves driving. Subaru is attempting to calm the nerves of those who don't like driving in winter weather conditions. Because unlike most cars, all of theirs are all-wheel drive, which perform very well is harsh conditions. Here Subaru is doing a great job of emotionally appealing to their consumer via an informative framework. By pointing out the key aspects of their all-wheel drive system and the advantages provided, Subaru is able to effectively communicate their message.

Here is a very unique ad that was ran in the New York Times. It is an ad for the show Game of Thrones which I recently started watching. As far as ad's go this one is top notch. It creates a shadow like figure of a dragon across the whole page and then goes on to tell the reader when the next season starts in the bottom corner. This technique immediately catches the attention of anyone on reading this newspaper because the shadow stands out drastically from the rest of the text. The disadvantage however of this ad is that most people who watch HBO are probably not the biggest audience to newspapers.

Being a male with a beard, these commercials have always intrigued me. Buying razors every month can easily add up. Half the time its cheaper to buy a starter pack (with the handle) rather than to just buy the razor refills. Dollar shave club has had a very effective digital marketing campaign in which they've made many people feel like they are overpaying for their current razors. Being able to convince someone you have a superior product for a cheaper price plays right into the desires of most consumers. With all the reviews and well crafted ads Dollar Shave Club has successfully made their stake in the razor market.

For companies the best advertising is free advertising. For those who take advantage, social media can be an excellent platform for generating free marketing. I found this example of Doritos where they were holding a retweet contest to win a Doritos party. Every retweet that Doritos gets on their post is seen by an exponential amount of people, which is there main goal. With the retweet contest it basically takes nothing of the participant to enter and quickly gain exposure quicker than a paid ad can sometimes do. For companies that already have a strong social media presence I think that these type of contest are great ways of free marketing for the company.

This week we were supposed to pay attention to alternative ways brands create advertising. I immediately thought about one of the fastest growing Youtuber/ Twitch streamer, Ninja. Ninja plays Fortnite online and streams his games almost everyday on Twitch and post his best games of the day to Youtube, where he averages 5 million views on a video in 3 days which is a staggeringly high number. His videos are always uploaded in what looks like a spare bedroom of his. Something always constant though is the Bud Light fridge that is strategically placed over his shoulder. This fridge has since been switched out for a red bull, but I wasn't able to find a picture of it. To some they may think its a random placement, but Ninja is actually sponsored by Red Bull and placing there fridge in his stream is a way of adverting for them that is guaranteed to reach millions of people. With the massive influence Ninja has as one of the most popular Fortnite gamers I think the product placement is very effective and has even made me want a Red Bull while playing myself.

Week 11-Email Ads

When it comes to direct email ads, I personally try to avoid as many of them as i can. I unsubscribe from as many companies email lists as I can. But this is one company that has been able to send me something that feels so personal and useful that it's actually worth getting emails from them. SeatGeek sends a couple emails a week to me about the different sporting events near me and their prices. I love attending baseball games at Globelife Park in Arlington and especially when it's because I got a good deal on the tickets. Because of these emails alone I went to four games last year that I probably wouldn't have gone to if I hadn't received those emails. Direct email marketing has a cost advantage over direct mail marketing because companies don't have to pay for envelopes or postage. I believe that if companies are truly able to understand their consumers interest and send them emails that feel somewhat personalized, is the most effective way for companies to directly market to their consumers.

For this week I thought about Spotify's free premium trial they offer to all basic users. I had just started using Spotify when I got a notification I could try their premium service for a week. Their basic service plays ads every so often and only lets you skip and search a limited number of songs. I had a vacation coming up and decided I would activate my trial during my vacation to see how much I liked it. I ended up falling in love with their product/service during this week. Being able to create my own playlists and search any song in there library was a new world to me. I had typically been opposed to paying for music when there are so many free options out there but once I tried Spotify premium I knew I was going to have to subscribe after my trial ended. For companies who are confident they have a superior product/service a free trial promotion can be a great way for people to get their hands on your product and start to fall in love with it. The benefits from a free trial will almost always pay for itself as the conversion rate of consumers will drastically increase after they are able to get their own hands on experience.

For this weeks post we were asked to look at sponsorship. Instead of looking at a successful one, I wanted to go a different route and take a look at a sponsorship that wasn't successful, Gatorade Tiger. When this product first came out in 2008 it was one of my favorites. I had just started playing golf with my parents and every time we went I always had to pick up a bottle of Gatorade Tiger because I thought it would help me play better. Next thing I know Tiger Woods is in the news for all the wrong reasons. Because of this negative publicity Gatorade decided to pull the product for fear of consumers looking down on them for supporting a guy facing what Tiger was accused of. Just like my favorite line of Gatorade was gone by the end of 2009. This wasn't the only company that pulled their sponsorship from Tiger either. Which brings up the biggest companies have when deciding to sponsor someone as big as Tiger. It's really hard for the company to truly know if their selected sponsor will carry brand image they desire in all aspects of life. While sponsorship can be very beneficial for both parties involved they can also be toxic bombs waiting to blow up in the companies face.
