The catacombs build suspense and tension because it is filled with dead people which could be inferring or foreshadowing the characters death. The scary tunnels build the suspense and make the story more detailed and interesting.

The catacombs example a Decaying Structure. Also, I think his cough foreshadows his death. For instance, in paragraph 35, he says, "We will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible."

I believe the underground area and tunnel full of dead people is a strong version of symbolism and foreshadowing for the future full of death. I believe in the future one of them will die because of the mystery and dark area.
