Question 8 from the viewing guide to "Guns, Germs, and Steel" asked if you agree with Diamond's argument that of a civilizations' ability to gain power, wealth, and strength "...what's more important is the hand that people have been dealt, the raw materials they've had at their disposal." Why or why not? Use examples from the video to support your answer.

I do agree with Jared Diamond because it is shown that a lot of the reasons certain areas were more successful than others is because of what materials they were given. The people of Papa New Guinea aren’t advanced as modern day Americans because the resources and animals in their area don’t help/benefit them. Domestication of useful plants and animals helps civilizations move along and develop new techniques and advance their way of living. Without that people have to focus on their survival and it is difficult for them to take a step forward.

I agree with Diamonds statement that the geography of where people are more important than their ability to gain power, wealth, and strength all depends on where they are located. If a civilization is poor, they can use their surroundings to improve their living conditions. They may be in a forest where they have lumber to build with, or near a river for farming. Over time the people with better raw materials will end up on top, because they are able to progress their civilization more than others.

I think his statement makes sense because people are pretty similar. Not one group of people is just somehow “better” or more intelligent, more resourceful, or stronger. It depends a lot on what resources they had and raw materials they were exposed to such as crops and animals. As long as they had those resources any group such as people in New Guinea may have potential to advance faster.

For example, the civilization on The Fertile Crescent was so successful because of the area around them. There was a good source of water, and the of the big 4 of domesticated animals were also local, so it wasn't hard to find a source of food and the animals could help them with farm work.

I do agree because if a civilisation is put in an are with vast amounts of plants that are a very good plant to grow and they have access to loads of domesticable animals its almost certain that they will technologically advance faster because it'll be easier for that civilisation to make enough food for everyone in the city, this meant that not everyone had to concentrate on farming, there could be other people that invented new technologies, or people to advanced culture. While another civilization that had access to almost no domesticable animals and only had poor plants to plant would have to engage almost everyone into making enough food for the colony to survive, therefore drastically slowing down the technological development of the civilisation.

I do agree with Jared Diamond and his theory. The hand that people have been dealt and the raw materials they have at their disposal will most likely impact the speed of their progress. They could spend time doing other things rather than look for food all day. This leads to great advancements, and helps civilizations grow and gain power. Some areas definitely gave the people living there an advantage because at the same time where people had a surplus of food, somewhere else, people were struggling to find food, and they were severely malnourished.

I agree because I think if all people were dealt the same hand they would probably have developed in similar ways, if it weren’t for inequalities in geography most civilizations would be equal and there would not be such a massive divide between more and less modern civilizations.

Absolutely! Your location and geography gave you the ability to farm better and then collect more resources. Most of todays world powers have great land for farming and have the ability to acquire natural resources easily. If you compare New Guinea to America, the American midwest is some of the best farming land in the entire world. New Guinea has nothing that could hold a candle to that. Diamond is right, it boils down to geographic luck.

I agree with Jared because through the exploration of how geography affected the growth of civilizations it becomes visible that based on resources in the area it can determine how well a civilization can prosper. For example in the Middle east there was wild barley and wheat, but in New Guinean they are surrounded by jungles which makes it difficult to find good food that is enough to feed a group but also nutritious enough.
