"once we got inside the gloomy, cavernous mess, I saw hundreds of people eating at the wooden picnic tables" There was a lot of people. They were also trying to be first to get their food and plates.

A bus pulled up to a grandstand and they can see hundreds of Japanese Americans lined up. They were registered and rapidly medical check made and were placed in home.

"food improved gradually" They been getting better food than what they got in the beginning. They have been showing that they care about them. They would go to the mess hall for all meals during arrival.
