One thing I saw was how the teacher asked the student to remind her which piece was their then asked probing questions such as, "What were you thinking when you choose that design or what is the meaning behind your design?" These are excellent questions because they ask the student to explain their personal thought process and express the how and why of their art.
As far as other ways that teachers use formative assessment to engage all learners and check their process is by doing these mini critique's or explanation sessions. These little talks allow the teacher to see where the individual is at and if there is a larger number of students struggling with the same thing, then they can draw the class back together to reiterate ideas and concepts, if not then they can help those students grow and manifest their ideas in their own unique ways.

I really have come to appreciate UDL for the way that it can help guide me along to a fuller, more comprehensive lesson plan as compared to some previous methods I have learned. UDL asks you to find ways to reach all students in multiple modes of engagement. As you move through the process, it is easy to see that most of us are already doing these things, but by using the outline, we are ensuring that all students are reaching the same outcomes. I find that by the time I have reached the third column, I have already done those steps, thus I know that the information I would like for them to do, has be distributed through everyone and there will be better results of learning in my class.

I watched several but was amazed at Media Arts (Gr. 10) "Graffiti: A digital Identity" by Brian Leichnitz Leichnitz. He organizes his course by having a Big Question that is asked throughout the entire class. Smaller assignments are given to lead towards the end goal. It seems each assignment is a for of summative assessment towards desired learning objective. Another aspect I really liked is his use of Peer Assessment as a technique to motivate and teach that specific feedback is useful for refining artwork. He has some great art youtubes on his channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvAp2feHomulAjQKxyqpTvA

Approaching the work as a process vs product. Looking at the assignment through a lens of how to most effectively give each student a learning experience that meets their own unique needs becomes paramount. The approach to reach the end goal needs to be met through many routes. Having each student's educational needs met is the challenge and the fun part. Being open-minded, flexible, reflective and supportive of all methods I believe is key for the students to feel proud and connected to their artwork and education. I loved the ideas in the Arts for All video about using clips, hangers, gripping tools; and the balloon to make a "satisfying circle."

For UDL it always come down to how the student learns and how they can best show their understanding of the information. There are so many ways to teach students the information that they need to know and then check for understanding. Students can give explanation orally, written, digital, art the list goes on and on. Students need to learn in the way that is best for them and will best engage students. If it is not engaging students will not be learning to the best of their ability.
