Watergate was a term used to describe a politically scandalous period between 1972-74. The Watergate Burglars were a group of people who broke into the Demoratic's National Committe office in 1972. Richard Nixon made a speech about the event, one released the White House tapes. Sumpreme Court wanted Nixon to release more tapes before he left office. Nixon resigned in 1974. The Watergate scandal made changes in campaign finance and more aggression attitude in the media.

The establishment of EPA and the Endangered Species Act

The Endangered Species Act is the conservation of threatened and endangered plants and animals including the habitats in which they were found in. The establishment was based off of a polluted environment.

Since the EPA has been made, there has been a higher care for the environment. Due to the endangered species act, they have taken care of more endangered plants, animals, and their habitats.

Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court Ruling

Roe was a single mother who went to court due to the concerns of the Texas law on abortion. Her doctor Halliford was also tried because of his assistance in the abortion. They won the case. Wade cross-appealed the district court's rule in favor of Roe and Halliford. This case brought the issue of abortion to surface, and and made people reconsider the legal issue of the situation. Courts began to throw out the abortion bans.

The Paris Peace Accords

The United States, South Vietnam, Viet Cong and North Veitnam all signed an agreement in Paris to end the war.

The United States had to draw up two agreements because South Vietnam did not recognize Viet Cong as a representitve. Everyone agreed to withdrawal from Laos. They were trying to reunify the country without force.

1973 Arab- Israeli War

Nixon realized that the Arab frustration for Israel to withdrawal from their terriorty could have severe consequences for the United States. In 1969 Nixon had formed the "Rogers Plan", but the Societ, Egypt and Israel rejected it because they did not want Israel to pull out of the territory. The tables starte to turn and America and Soviet union agreed to pull back. Eventually America decided to provide weapons for the Israelis and war turned against the Arabs. This war still goes on today, and America is caught between two areas. It is forcing us to spend millions on providing aid to both sides.

Kent State Universty Shooting

On May 4, l970 President Nixon had announced that he needed 150,000 more soldiers for an expansion of the Vietnam War effort. This caused massive protests to sprout in countless campuses. At Kent State University in Ohio, protesters launched a demonstration to show that they were against this. Members of the Ohio National Guard fired into the crowd of protesters, killing four and wounding nine Kent State students. The event triggered a nationwide student strike that forced hundreds of colleges and universities to close.

the Kent State shooting triggered the only national student strike in US history. Public opinion shifted against the war in Vietnam.

OPEC and Arab Oil Embargo

In 1973 Arab members of OPEC decided to retalliate against the United States for porviding military assistance to the Israelis, so they imposed an embargo. The embargo prevented the Arabs from shipping oil to the nations and they begain to produce less oil. The United States were losing the ability to do everyday things, and had to make many changes on the road to preserve. The United States still is partially dependent on their oil, so when things go bad over seas it affects us.

During the World War 2, President Franklin D. Roosevelt lowered the minimum age for the military to 18. Many youths believed that if they were "old enough to fight, old enough to vote."

This caused the voting age to become 18. Many youths believed it was their decision to vote due to the joining of the minitary.

The Pentagon Papers and New York Times v. the United States Supreme Court ruling

The Pentagon Papers was the name given to a secret Department of Defense study of U.S. political and military involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967. A man named Daniel Ellsberg decided that this shouldn't be kept from the public. Published at a time when support for U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War was steadily eroding, the Pentagon Papers confirmed many people’s suspicions about the active role the U.S. government had taken in building up the conflict.

E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy were later involved in the break-in at the Watergate in 1972 that would lead to Nixon’s resignation in 1974.

President Richard Nixon was the first president to resign their postion mid-term.

He resigned after the incident of the Watergate scandal. It was a hit the people of the United States because shortly after Ford became president. He was the first president to not be elected by the people or electoral college.

Why was the 1970s Important?

During the 1970s many major events occurred that changed the way that

the United States began to govern itself and it affected other nations as well. We were able to end the Vietnam War, but a war between the Arabs and Israel broke out. Laws were broken and many reforms were made to keep up with the changing times. Had the 1970s not occurred we would not have the country we have today, and neither would Vietnam, Soviet Union, Israel or the Arab nations.

Richard Nixon felt that having a good relationship with China would benefit due to China's importance and size. Nixon got was able to contact the leader of China and hold a secret meeting, discussing the territorial parts of mainland China and the opinions of the Soviet Union.

President Richard M. Nixon secretly initiated the beginning of the end of the Cold War, but he couldn't have done it without playing the Chinese off against the Soviets and having a meeting during the time of the Cold War.
