Analytics drive decision-making. Without data, it is difficult to support justifications for instructional decisions. With the emergence of the "learning Sciences", data is becoming more and more part of the educational process.

Nowhere in instructional Design are analytics more prevalent than in a good needs assessment. In fact needs are often defined in terms of comparisons to standardized outcomes.

Data sources are abundant, but educators need to vet sources of data as well as the tools used to collect data. Data has enormous potential to help teachers, administrators, and parent make informed decisions about curricular and instructional decisions. But they can also be misused to make erroneous, misleading statements ... Caveat emtor...

Analytics might be collected to evaluate the effectiveness of a particular instructional technique, intervention, or teaching program. Data from state and district level exams can often be used in this way.

Advantages: Often analytics from sources like this can be used to measure gaps in student learning trajectories within a teaching program.

Disadvantages: Grain size. These analytics can look at trends in data across larger sample sizes, however results are often inappropriately used to look at individual students or small sub-populations of students where samples are not representative.

Analytics in education is not a new trend. Test scores from metrics of student achievement have been used for years to predict student success in future contexts. Perhaps the most famous is the SAT. SATs have traditionally been used by higer education institutions to predict student success at their institutions.

Advantages: Allows the college to process large populations of applicants and make decisions on admittance based on what similar successful students scored on a standardized tests.

Disadvantages: Standardized tests give a look at overall trends but may not give an accurate picture of an individual student.
