I have decided to choose Berita Harian newspaper regarding a page design in it. I would like to give my point of view about the page design. First and foremost, the page design provides the structure that keeps elements evenly aligned and gives the newspaper an attractive look which helps in increasing readership. Apart from that, it is in a tabloid grid which is half the size of broadsheet. It also is a 5-column format that is most common in tabloid. A newspaper with tabloid grid page design is easier to produce and cheap to print. Besides, advertisements can dominate a tabloid page more effectively than in broadsheet. Page design making aims to give pages an orderly aim attractive shape, to display news according to its importance and to enhance readability of newspaper’s contents. These aims will be achieved if the writer follows the rule and the dos and don’ts to create a readable and pleasing page design to the eye.

In addition, this newspaper applying the basic design principles in story placement. The strongest story goes at the top with the bigger size of headline. Commonly, the lead story will have the biggest headline. The headline then goes smaller as we move down the page and the stories shaped like rectangles exactly looks alike the newspaper that I have chosen. The writer also used subheads which is one or two line head within the body of a story in type in the stories to break the gray area.

Besides, the page design is modular design. Modular design is the idea of treating stories as modules or as discrete rectangular units so that the stories look neat, pleasant and tidy. This type of layout is designed in such a way that the page is break into a series of rectangles. Headlines and related texts will form a four sided rectangular units. Each story is made to fit into a rectangular module.

Overall, I think the page design is quite good with the mugshot photo. But I would like to suggest the writer to add one horizontal photo or dominant photo in the stories so that the stories will not look dull, more appealing and will attract the readers to read it.

 

 

 

The page design is good and this is because the arrangement of modular is rectangular units and it shows that the news is neatly and suitable for readers to read. The page also consists two photos, based on the stories. The page design will attract readers to read the news. In addition, the story of robbery is very quiet famous recently in Malaysia. Readers always read the popular stories nowadays.

There are some suggestions from me to make it more attractive. Firstly, the second story which is on the right news is vertical lines grid and it is not suitable for the page design in this news. For me, it must use horizontal lines grid so that readers can easily read it and not to look on other sides. Last but not least, the designer can put two or three of pictures on one-page design to make sure the readers alert and attract to the story based on the pictures. These ways can make readers like to read easily and curiosity from the stories.

       I have decided to choose a tabloid newspaper which is Metro which is half of the broadsheet newspaper. Before make a design Newspaper, start with a dummy. The page used horizontal line of grid. Then, The types of grid used is a tabloid grid. This design is made up of vertical lines and has a 5-column grid. In addition, the stories are all in rectangular shape with an image each. Besides, the editor used a 3 modules in the page design which can make the page looks neat and readers can read the stories easily because it consists three variety of stories with have a picture in each stories. Furthermore, the cutline of three images in the page are placed below the picture.

        In my opinion, to make it interesting, in the page design should add the advertisement to attract the readers. Overall, I think the page design is quite simple and easy for readers to understand the story. It is because the stories are arranged neatly.

 

I chose a page from Kosmo! newspaper. This newspaper used tabloid grid, with a 5-column format which is the most common in tabloid. As we can see on this page, it consists of three different stories. The dominant story in the page design use a different headline than other story which is written in a larger and bolder text to attract reader's attention. This page consists of a few images which also known as pages with art. 

 

All of the story shapes rectangular, it emphasizes the most important story using a larger and bolder text for the headline to attract the readers' attention. The editor used a boxing stories to give a visual emphasizes which telling the reader the story is different from others. This newspaper also used bastard column measures as an effective way to show that the story is different.

This newspaper doesn't apply the basic design principles in story placement. The basic design principles put the strongest story at the top with the bigger size of headline. Commonly, the lead story will have the biggest headline. The headline then goes smaller as we move down the page and the stories shaped like rectangles. For this page that I chose, the strongest story is on the center of the page. The editor used kicker which set above the main headline and gives additional information to the readers.

Furthermore, the editor used 3 modules for this page design. Modular design is the idea of treating stories as modules or as discrete rectangular units so that the stories look neat, pleasant and tidy.

Overall, this page design is good and simple as it contain pictures and the stories also not too long which is consider as readable and pleasing to the eyes of the reader.

 

In my opinion, I think this page design that I have selected is too crowded and mess the reader. Actually, I think the designer should reduce the crowded story in the front page. It consist 7 column which is in a rectangular shape that was called modular design. The photo is clear and attractive to attract the reader to read this story. This newspaper using tabloid grid which is more attractive towards reader.    

                 Modular design is the idea of treating stories as modules as discrete rectangular units. This newspapers is using 7 modular. In my opinion, this newspaper will be more interesting if there is an advertisement in it.
