Educating the older adults on how to properly use assistive devices (AD) and AD safety was very rewarding. Willow and I led this session and I feel it went very smoothly. The participants were numerous with 28 individuals showing up. They were all very engaged and attentive while Willow and I were demonstrating how to properly use the device. We had a volunteer that came to the front of the room to place laundry into a laundry basket using a reacher which was great. I feel we did a good job of keeping them engaged by making jokes and answering questions. On the other hand, I feel that I should demonstrate more times in different positions and spots in the room so that everyone can see clearly. I will make sure to ask if everyone can see me next time.

Willow took charge of the dance session while Amanda, Katie, and I observed and monitored for safety. I feel we did a great job of keeping the participants engaged by using music that they enjoy and dancing with them. Since we had so many participants, Amanda stayed over to the side with the participants that were off to the side to keep them engaged and did a great job. We made sure to keep a keen eye out for individuals that looked unsteady or tired and offered water breaks to them. They LOVED the dance session. The twist was their favorite dance move. We all had a great time dancing along with them. They knew where to step by using colored tape as guidance. To make things move along more smoothly I suggested that we put all of the different colors of tape down right away instead of starting with the white and then adding the yellow and blue later. I believe everyone participated in this session whether it was standing or sitting. Next session we will encourage the sitting individuals to participate more since they were slightly less engaged than the standing individuals.

Instead of handing out the identifying home hazards sheet and having them identify the fall hazards around the room, we decided to make it more interactive by having a group discussion about the fall hazards presented to them. Participants identified each fall hazard in the room and we had a discussion about each. Some of the participants had a hard time seeing the items so we are going to make sure to hold up each item and have duplicates all around the room for next week. Modifications were discussed to increase safety and to reduce the risk of falling in their environment.

Amanda led the yoga session while Willow, Katie, and I stood by for safety and followed along with the yoga poses. 25 individuals participated and almost all of them engaged in some way. The older adults enjoyed the yoga session and paid full attention to Amanda's instructions. To improve the session for next week we are going to make sure to better encourage the participants to stand if they can so that they get the best benefits possible from our program. Also, we will greater emphasize that the people sitting must scooch as forward as possible in their chairs instead of leaning against the seat. I feel that the yoga was slightly rushed and more breathing and mindfulness could be incorporated into next week so we will make those adjustments. Next time we will also make sure to emphasize the names of each move so that the participants have better recall.

Katie and Amanda led the session on transfers and I feel it was very important and helpful information for the participants. All participants listened attentively and when asked if they learned anything new, one man mentioned that he was using his cane incorrectly after surgery and will remember this information for next time. They did a great job of demonstrating from different angles and areas in the room. I also chimed in and made sure to emphasize to lock the walker before sitting down.

Katie led the tai chi session and the participants seemed to greatly enjoy it. 16 older adults attended this session and 2 did not participate and eventually left. One man mentioned that he has a bad back and could not attend further. Katie adjusted from the previous comments and reiterated the names of each move and moved slowly through each move. The participants got a kick out of the names of each move and many stood up being that they were more encouraged this time to stand. Also, we made sure that everyone seated scooted to the edge of their chair. The participants were very happy when provided with a packet on how to do each pose on their own. for our sessions next week, packets will also be provided for yoga.

The participants had a great time having snacks and lemonade/iced tea at our fall prevention Jeopardy game. I led the Jeopardy game session and enjoyed hosting the game. 14 older adults were split into two teams and worked as teams to answer jeopardy questions. Some of the questions were too easy for the group so we plan on making some new, harder questions for next week. The winning team had the first opportunity of choosing between a succulent or an automatic LED night light for their prize and the losing team chose after them.

Monday had a much smaller turnout than last week with 8 individuals attending the session. All individuals participated and enjoyed the session. We reiterated all of the AD information from last week, asking them if they remembered the next step to keep them engaged. As I was the leader of this session, I made sure to ask many times if everyone could see me, and I also had Willow demonstrating in a different part of the room so that everyone could see. We adapted the reacher activity from last week, having a volunteer use the reacher to grab a rag from high up, clean up a fake spill, and then place it into a laundry basket about 8 feet away. The volunteer enjoyed the reacher activity.

As for the dance activity, each individual enjoyed the session and participated. Group members took a more active role since there were not as many participants as last time and joined in with them the whole time. To make the session move along more smoothly, we only placed the white baseline tape under their feet. Even individuals that were very unsure about participating at first ended up having a blast. I think dance is their favorite. This session we made sure to encourage the participants extra to stand up and many did but the ones that remained seated were prompted to scooch to the edge of their chair and reminded of why sitting on the edge of the chair is more beneficial.

This session, I brought in duplicates of each fall hazard and made sure to hold them up so that everyone could see the items.

The yoga session went much more smoothly this week since breathing and mindfulness were emphasized more this time. We also moved through the yoga poses much slower this time and made sure to emphasize the name of each yoga pose. The participants found the session relaxing. Also, as a group, we greatly encouraged standing or scooching to the edge of the chair if they wanted to remain seated. We made sure to position ourselves across the room so that they could see our demonstrations. Packets on how to do the yoga moves at home were handed out at the end of the session and they were excited to be able to do it on their own.

Being that there were only 8 people, nobody had trouble seeing the demonstrations but we still made sure to ask if everyone could see. Katie did a great job of keeping the participants engaged by demonstrating part of the transfer and then asking them what comes next.

The participants enjoyed the tai chi session even though we had to rush through a little bit. Katie made signs with pictures of the moves to reinforce the names of the tai chi moves and held them up throughout the session. Packets on how to do the tai chi moves at home were handed out at the end of the session and they were excited to be able to do it on their own.

They were very competitive with one another this time and were more challenged by the new questions. As a group, we added many new questions that were more challenging since it was too easy for them last time. The score was close and team 2 won by 200 points.
