Loss, Change and Transition: What is loss? by Michael

What is loss? What does loss look like to you? What does it feel like? What kinds of emotions are connected with loss? How does a person's behaviour change when experiencing loss?

Take some time to reflect on these questions before adding your thoughts to the community wall.

Loss can be, the loss of a loved one, a pet, your hearing, eye sight, a limb. The loss of something or someone. Loss can be for a short period of time or losing something or someone forever. Loss can be sudden or gradual. Anything that causes you to feel grief or like you are at a loss or empty or without, from losing something or someone. Loss can be the death of a loved one, the loss of a relationship, your health, your way of life, your identity, a job or of your possessions. Experiencing loss or grief can bring an emotional reaction, which then brings change, through the way a person functions both dysfunctional and functionally after the experience.

Loss More broadly

To think about loss more broadly than just loosing someone you love was tough for me to comprehend at first, however understanding that the same feelings or similar can be felt by loosing other things that also give you such a strong sense of belonging and self worth e.g. a job can have just as much of an impact. Everyone deals with loss in various different ways and it can take people a really long time to come to terms with the attachment to the person/thing not ever being there again.

My view on loss has definitely changed after this research. At first I considered loss as just losing something you loved and that you would feel grief afterwards. I can now see it through another perspective and that is losing something that was not good for you. Such as an abusive relationship, or an addiction. In this case loss is welcomed. I also understand about losing things such as roles, such as mothers who no longer have children who are dependent on them. This can be hard to work through and parents could find this transition hard to create other identities for themselves.

Loss is personal and different to each and everyone of us. What one person will grieve another would not give a second thought to. Loss can take many forms and effect us in many various ways. A feeling of emptiness, a longing for what is no longer there or regret for not saying those words, taking that action or just doing it. Loss can leave a whole in your being, you try to fill it, push it to the side or hide it in a box in the depths of your mind but every now and then it comes back. A smell, a sound, a feeling can trigger that memory and that sense of loss, something or someone missing comings flooding back a new.
