Today all children go to school from the ages of five to eighteen. But in the 19th century only the children of rich families went to school. In that period many factories opened in britain . The owners needed people to work in the factories. They preferred children because they didn't pay them very much. Poor families sent their children to work in the factories because they needed the money. Some children lived in the workhouse because their parents were ill in prison. The owners ''bought'' these children and sent them to work from the age of six or seven until the age og twenty-one. The children worked from five o'clock in the morning until ten o'clock in the evening. They ate while they worked. A typical breakfast or lunch was milk, bread and potatoes. they work was often dangerous and unthealthy. Some children had bad accidents and bacame disabled. The owners often hit the children when they stopped working.
