Your work would not be marked down simply because you chose to focus on one or more of the examples mentioned in any of my lecture. Every example provided in the lectures or seminars could be an example that you might explore. You've got to create an essay title with an example/s of your choosing.

What is important and in order to produce an interesting essay, is to see your unique perspective and analysis of the elements in the topic.

It is also important to make sure that your essay is focused and well-argued, regardless of which example/s you choose to analyse. Make sure that you have a clear thesis statement and that your analysis of the elements is supported by specific examples and evidence. Additionally, be sure to engage with any relevant academic literature on the topic to demonstrate your understanding of the subject matter.

Ultimately, the quality of your analysis and argument will be what determines your grade, not necessarily the specific example you choose to focus on. Though a poor example may lead to a weaker essay, and thus a lower mark.

Of course, I'd be happy to help clarify this for you!
You need to present an example to demonstrate a specific theory of knowledge and understanding relating to fashion theory. The specific theories are presented in the weekly lectures.

First, you need to identify a specific theory or concept within fashion theory that you want to explore. For example, you could focus on the concept of "Subcultural Theories", which argues that groups of people with shared values break away from mainstream society, conforming to the values and norms of the subculture to which they belong and expressing this through dress.

To demonstrate your understanding of this concept, you could provide an example of a subculture and discuss how its values influenced its fashion at the time, what social influences contributed to its rise, and how it has been revived or updated in contemporary style.

I hope that helps.

In week 10, I will introduce feminism in fashion; the complex and diverse beliefs, ideas, and practices that aim to promote gender equality and empower women. We will explore how feminist theory asserts that women have been historically and systematically disadvantaged in almost all areas of life, from politics and economics to social and cultural norms, due to gender. We will discuss how feminist theories have evolved and how there is no fixed rule on what makes a feminist, leading to different perspectives.

We shall examine how feminist and fashion theories intersect, as both fields concern social norms, power dynamics, and representation. We will discuss one of the main ways feminist and fashion theories relate through analysing gendered norms or expectations in clothing. Many feminist theorists have long argued that gender is a social construct and that dress and adornment significantly shape our understanding of gender. In addition, many say that clothing reinforces negative stereotypes of gender identities and norms, even suppressing one gender over a dominant one. Similarly, we will explore how clothing and style are used to express and subvert gender identities to further the feminist cause.

Although the lecture has yet to come up, I'd encourage you to explore the provided content and continue researching.

The ideas you present to explore Princess Diana's dress are interesting, but there are some challenges. Of course, firstly, you'd need to provide a compelling case that she expressed feminist ideals through her dress. Was she a feminist?

I'm a bit confused about your use of "Power dressing". Power dressing is a term that emerged in the 1980s to describe a style of clothing that was designed to convey authority, confidence, and professionalism, particularly in the workplace. I think you'd need to prove that she dressed overwhelmingly in a way that could be described as ‘Power Dressing’ if you pursue this. Does this need to be the crux of your argument?

You could certainly explore how she dressed during her marriage to Prince Charles v divorce. During marriage it was often a traditional, conservative style appropriate for her role as a royal (future Queen) but this evolved as she became more independent towards the end of her marriage and after her divorce. There is a solid case to present as she began experimenting with bolder, more daring styles. Did this reflect her newfound independence and sense of empowerment? Can you argue that? Did she dress with hidden codes? The iconic black sheep jumper was no coincidence!

Overall - interesting ideas developing. Needs some refinement, but I'm excited by its possibility.

Yes, you can use broader fashion theories or philosophies to inform your argument. For all of you, drawing from more general theories or philosophies can help you contextualise your research topic within a larger framework, and help you identify gaps or areas for further exploration. I've said a few times the best essays make connections between multiple theories presented in the lectures, but there should be an overarching syllabus topic that is central so you can offer a clear understanding of a particular theory and stick to a clear narrative. Just be sure that the theories and philosophies you draw from are relevant and applicable to your research topic.

This is a response to an email query I received about an essay title looking at the counterculture around tracksuits and feedback on an essay plan. There are some helpful pointers here for all. I'm sharing with permission of the student.

Your essay title appears clear and concise, effectively communicating your essay's primary focus and argument.

There are ways you could improve it if you see that to be necessary. For example, you could come up with a catchy phrase or play on words that relate to your topic so it's more intriguing or include a provocative question and emphasise the relevance or significance of your subject.

It would help if you considered providing a compelling case from the offset that tracksuits represent an anti-establishment youth subculture. Debating whether they do or don't isn't the main focus, so I don't view that as an issue as you're exploring 'how', but you need to provide a clear, concise rationale with some compelling solid evidence. I'd recommend this form as a part of your intro – it wouldn't need to be lengthy.

You might want to consider if it is worth you needing to provide such a comprehensive overview of youth subcultures in general in the first paragraph.

In terms of your plan for each paragraph, it looks like you are being thorough, which is encouraging, but you may need to consider if you have to scope to analyse all the points thoroughly. Consider which are the key points that you can elaborate on, and which are supplementary. Too many points won't provide you the opportunities to thoroughly analyse.

Remember, your essay word count is relatively short, so you must limit your analysis and focus on the most critical aspects. It's essential to balance providing enough information to support your argument and not overwhelming the reader with too much information.

Finally, what evidence are you presenting to connect to your points? Consider these within your plan.

Sure you can. Using a screenshot from an online source, in your instance, an e-commerce shop, can be a helpful way to illustrate a point effectively. I'd recommend including a concise image caption. Make sure in your text to provide a clear rationale for how this demonstrates your argument.

You also need to cite the image appropriately using Harvard Referencing. You should include a brief citation within the text of your essay when you refer to the screenshot. This can be done by mentioning the author or organization responsible for the online shop and the year of publication (if available - probably the year you took the screenshot). If the screenshot does not have a clear author or publication date, you can use a descriptive title or the website's name.

Then for your image list, follow this general template for your reference: Author/Organization.

When analysing each visual example, the word count can vary. The focus should be on effectively conveying your analysis and providing sufficient supporting details for each sample, considering your question and the argument you are presenting. So, yes, it is acceptable if one example requires more elaboration due to multiple aspects. However, it is essential to ensure clear points are made regarding the relevance of your analysis to your argument.

If you have a significant example that encompasses various elements such as the dress, nail colour, hair, and makeup, as you mentioned, it is possible to divide it into separate sections within your essay.

I've mentioned this quite a few times in the seminars. Please listen to the seminar recordings and check out all the slides/handouts provided on LEARN.

Generally, first-person is not advised. Academic writing typically aims for an objective and formal tone. The focus is on presenting research, analysis, and arguments rather than personal experiences or personal opinions.

You're expected, of course, to express your findings/thoughts in the conclusion, but this should remain professional in the tome. However, it can be acceptable in specific contexts, particularly on a project that is inspired by something close to your heart.

Incorporating your own research, such as a photo, into your essay can significantly enhance the credibility of your argument and the richness of your study.

However, surveys or human participation in this module are only allowed if I've given you the go-ahead to get ethical approval.
