He seems like he is important, but he isn't portrayed that way. He is so drunk he thinks the books are alive.

Gatsby: he starts by inviting Nick to they party because he wants to meet him. He then introduces him the the party lifestyle. He thinks that he remembers Nick from WW1. He is a very formal person and he doesn't drink because he wants to be aware of his surroundings.

Nick: he is more of an introvert. He likes to keep to himself, however he is quick to judge those around him.
