In the short story, "Rainsford's first impression was that the man was singularly handsome: his second was that there was an original, almost bizarre quality about the general's face." Rainsford was impressed by General Zaroff's appearance. He thinks he was extremely handsome and was overwhelmed by it. General Zaroff's physical qualities were the thing that was most noticeable by Rainsford.

In "The Dangerous Game", "Only the devil himself could follow that complicated trail through the jungle after dark. But, perhaps, the general was a devil." (Connel 30). Rainsford thinks General Zaroff is the devil because of his extremely talented skill and wit. He thinks of General Zaroff as cunning but evil.

General Zaroff is someone who hunts people for sport, and that is generally frowned upon by other people. What is interesting is that he doesn't think he is doing anything too bad. For example, he states in the text, "I refuse to believe that so modern and civilized a young man as you seem to be harbors romantic ideas about the value of human life. Surely your experiences in the war- (Connell 25)" This shows that General Zaroff doesn't really think that what he is doing is wrong, making him all the more dangerous

In the story, Rainsford thought, "The general could follow a trail through the woods at night; he could follow an extremely difficult trail; he must have uncanny powers; only by the merest chance had the Cossack failed to see his quarry" (Connell 31). This shows General Zaroff is very talented in hunting. If he could follow Rainsford through the jungle even through a difficult trail, he must be extremely skilled.

Connell directly characterizes General Zaroff. An example of this is when he writes, "There was an original, almost bizarre quality about
the general's face. He was a tall man past middle age, for his hair was
a vivid white; but his thick eyebrows and pointed military mustache were
as black as the night from which Rainsford had come. His eyes, too, were
black and very bright. He had high cheekbones, a sharpcut nose, a spare,
dark face--the face of a man used to giving orders, the face of an
aristocrat." Connell tells his readers in a direct way what the general looks like, and shows his readers that he is aristocratic and strong.

The text states, "He was finding the general a most thoughtful and affable host, a true cosmopolite. But there was one small trait of the general's that made Rainsford uncomfortable. Whenever he looked up from his plate he found the general studying him, appraising him narrowly" (Connell
22). By Rainsford, General Zaroff is seen as a nice, friendly person. However, he gives off a rather creepy feeling since he continually stares at Rainsford.

credit: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/350154939756580139/

Overall, the image of General Zaroff that Connell wants to get across to his readers through the different techniques of characterization is that General Zaroff is cruel and sadistic, but also an uncannily talented hunter. He shows his readers that Zaroff would selfishly compromise anything to prevent his sense of boredom he had begun to feel during the hunt, including the lives of countless animals, people, and even compromise his own life and safety without a second thought. He shows us that General Zaroff, despite being sophisticated, well-read, and cunning, is a cold-blooded killer, who takes greatest pleasure lies in hunting others and ending their lives.
