The Puritans were a group of English protestants of the late 16th and 17th centuries who wanted to purify the churches of England and Rome. They always dressed in black in white in order to show their faith in God. Puritans believed that the big cathedrals and buildings were ungodly and that is why they wanted to purify the church in their country. The Puritans wanted to rid the Church of any Catholic residue and build upon the idea of John Calvin. After they started to spread their beliefs accross England, they started to get persecuted and they chose to escape and move to the Americas.

The Salem Witch Trials started when a group of girls whose names were Betty Parris, Ann Putnam, Mercy Lewis, and Mary Walcott, started to become extremely ill and started acting in a crazy way went to the doctor. The doctor suggested that the girls' problem might have a supernatural origin. After this, they started to call out certain women and tell people that they were witches. Because of the With Hysteria that was happening at the time people took this very seriously and started the trials. Some of the people they accused were Sara Good, Tituba, and Sarah Osborne. In the trials the girls would act in a weird way saying that they were being attacked by the evil spirit of the accused.

The Puritans believed in many things that influence some religions today. One thing they believed in was ''Total Depravity''. Total Depravity is the belief that everyone is a sinner from the moment they were born. Some religions today believe in this including Christianity. Another thing they believed was ''Predestination''. Predestination is the belief that God has already decided who will go to heaven and who will be sent to hell but no one else knows, and there was nothing you could do in order to save yourself if you were one of the damned.

There was a witch that lived in Salem and served as a slave and her name was Tituba. Tituba approached a group of girls and started to show them ''magic'' tricks, and this sparked the interest of the girls. Tituba started to teach them about withcraft and voodo magic. The girls came to her to learn more each day, mostly because of boredom since all they were able to do at that time was read the Bible and nothing else. Then the girls started to feel ill and asked for help.

The Witch Hunt

The Witch Hunt started mainly because of the Witch Hysteria that was afflicting the people that lived in Salem. Puritans believed that Satan was causing all kinds of evil in this world and he was contacting people in order to help him do evil. Because of this belief, they became so scared of witches that they wanted them gone. Even if the person being judged was not a witch, they could be killed if they did not confess to being witches. The Witch Hunt in Salem resulted in 19 men and women hanged and over 200 people imprisoned.
