This mini-exhibition, Modern Stories: Expressions of Community and Individuality, explores how artists from varying movements and cultural contexts depict urban life and the complex relationship between individuals and their communities. From Bellows’ realistic portrayal of immigrant communities in New York, Malevich’s abstract visions of ideological spaces, to Powers’ quilted narratives of cultural heritage, each artwork offers a unique lens on the interaction between environment, identity, and society. Through different languages, the exhibition encourages viewers to consider how communities foster belonging and how individuals carve out personal identities in the shared spaces of modernity.

Beginning with George Bellows Cliff dwellers, A American Modernist piece, Cliff Dwellers captures the density and vibrancy of New York's Lower East Side, highlighting the immigrant experience in a bustling urban landscape. Through Bellows’ brushwork and colors, the painting vividly depicts a scene of urban life where individuals and families create a community within a crowded, industrial cityscape.

Secondly from Kazimir Malevich The last futuristic exhibition 1915. Malevich’s abstract forms in this exhibition represent the Russian Avant-Garde and the desire to redefine the individual in modern society. His compositions focus on geometric shapes and dynamic balance, rejecting traditional representations to reflect the era's revolutionary ideals. Malevich’s work in the exhibit reimagines what "community" and "individuality" mean in an increasingly abstract, ideological world.

Lastly we have Harriet Powers Pictorial Quilt 1895-98. This African American folk art piece speaks to themes of community and identity through storytelling and craftsmanship. Each quilt block illustrates biblical and cultural narratives significant to Powers' community. This work underscores the importance of collective memory and storytelling, with each panel serving as a chapter in a communal history that defies the individualism often associated with modernism.

Together, these pieces encourage reflection on the ways shared spaces shape experiences, and how individual stories within those spaces contribute to a broader, evolving narrative of modernity.
