Education for the ecological transition. Relational-system thinking for the inhabitation of the Earth despite technocratic thinking.

Abstract

Several sectors are affected by the ecological transition: energy, industrial, and agricultural transition; urban planning with the creation of green spaces and shared energy efficiency; sustainable and shared mobility. All these areas involve actions that must be community-based to be effective. Consequently, the participation of citizens is fundamental to the implementation of this community transformation: it is necessary to develop forms of education based on relationships and fraternity. The commitment to denounce the dramas of contemporary society requires scientific and cultural reflection aimed at formulating an ethical project for humanity, considering the socio-economic implications and the global interconnections between human beings and all living beings.

The profound transformation of reality requires broad cooperation among people, valuing and interpreting individual efforts, and moving away from the logic of self transformation. We must move from an instrumental and individualistic logic – technocratic thinking – to a community-based logic – relational-system thinking –. From the perspective outlined by Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato si', this essay proposes a critique of technocratic thinking and highlights elements for promoting relational thinking. The ecological transition must be interpreted as a mind transforming experience for individuals and communities if it is to be directed toward the promotion of authentic e cological consciousness.

AbstractIn industrial symbiosis (IS), two or more dissimilar industrial processes exchange their non-product residues as resources (material and energy) in a collective approach for increasing the production efficiency and minimization of emissions and wastes in the whole system. This is regarded as an innovative solution in the movement from linear toward circular economy. Various models for industrial symbiosis has been introduced to the industrial ecology discussions, based on different degrees of centralization in the collaboration networks. Industrial symbiosis at regional scale is usually considered as a planned (or facilitated) approach which relies on the central role of an organization for connecting the network members (nodes) by regulation, providing information and incentives. While geographical proximity and system boundaries were considered as crucial factors in formation of industrial symbiosis in the earlier studies, more recent definitions pay less attention to such features. The hypothesis of this research is that the geographical (contextual) conditions can result in different categories of regional symbiotic networks. These features should be included in the process of planning or evaluation of possible scenarios prior to undertaking practical steps toward developing regional platforms or defining the networking programs. This study applies social network analysis (SNA) in combination with territorial analyses for European regions with different geographical features. Published documents about 47 regional industrial symbiosis projects were analysed this way. While the comparative studies between pairs of regions were common in IS literature, the impacts of geographical dependencies on such comparisons have been rarely considered. Based on this mapping activity 3 different arrangements were identified for regional symbiosis networks with energy exchanges, i.e. Centralized Closed Systems, Decentralized Closed Systems, and Semi-centralized open systems.

Abstract

Background Red blood cell (RBC) transfusions are commonly used to manage anemia-related symptoms, such as fatigue and dyspnea in patients with advanced cancer. Their use in palliative care (PC) remains controversial due to the lack of clear guidelines, potential risks, and ethical considerations.

Objective This narrative review aims to evaluate the role of RBC transfusions in patients with advanced cancer and those at the end of life.

Methods and data sources A comprehensive review of relevant existing literature was performed in various databases, using combinations of relevant keywords. Only studies published in English were considered.

Findings Anemia affects up to 77% of men and 68% of women with advanced cancer in palliative care. RBC transfusions may offer temporary symptomatic relief, but evidence supporting their routine use in palliative cancer patients is inconclusive. Studies report subjective response rates ranging from 31% to 70%. Benefits on fatigue and dyspnea often last <2 weeks and 23–35% of patients die within two weeks after the transfusion, raising concerns about futility. Variability in transfusion practices across different palliative care settings highlights the influence of clinician attitudes, resource availability, and institutional policies.

Conclusion RBC transfusions in advanced cancer and end-of-life care should be considered on a case-by-case basis, prioritizing patient-centered decision-making and ethical considerations. Though the benefit is often short, they may improve the quality of life for highly selected patients. Risks such as adverse reactions and resource allocation concerns must be considered. Further research is needed to establish evidence-based guidelines and standardized assessment tools to evaluate transfusion efficacy in this population.

System logs represent a valuable source of Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI), capturing attacker behaviors, exploited vulnerabilities, and traces of malicious activity. Yet their utility is often limited by a lack of structure, semantic inconsistency, and fragmentation across devices and sessions. Extracting actionable CTI from logs, therefore, requires approaches that can reconcile noisy, heterogeneous data into coherent and interoperable representations. We introduce OntoLogX, an autonomous Artificial Intelligence (AI) agent that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to transform raw logs into ontology-grounded Knowledge Graphs (KGs). OntoLogX integrates a lightweight log ontology with Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and iterative correction steps, ensuring that generated KGs are syntactically and semantically valid. Beyond event-level analysis, the system aggregates KGs into sessions and employs a LLM to predict MITRE ATT&CK tactics, linking low-level log evidence to higher-level adversarial objectives. We evaluate OntoLogX on both public and real-world honeypot datasets, demonstrating robust KG generation across multiple LLMs backends and accurate mapping of adversarial activity to MITRE ATT&CK tactics. Results highlight the effectiveness of the methodology in generating ontology-compliant KGs, along with their value in extracting actionable CTI.

Background: Exposure to stressful events increases the risk for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), and trauma-focused psychotherapy has shown efficacy in TRD patients with a history of early life stress (ELS). While both depression and ELS are known to impact gene expression, the transcriptomic changes following trauma-focused psychotherapy remain unexplored.

Objective: This study presents the first whole-transcriptome analysis to investigate gene expression changes related to trauma-focused psychotherapies effects in TRD patients.

Method: Twenty-six TRD patients assessed for ELS underwent trauma-focused psychotherapy, of those, 12 received trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT), and 15 Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). RNA sequencing was performed with Illumina Next-seq 2000 platform at T0 (baseline), after 8 weeks (T8, end of psychotherapy) and after 12 weeks (T12, follow-up). We examined differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and enriched pathways in association with the treatment.

Results: A total of 1793 DEGs with a significant adjusted p-value were identified in association with the effects of trauma-focused psychotherapies in the entire cohort. Notably, many of these genes are implicated in neuronal processes and inflammation, as well as psychiatric disorders, including GZMB, ZBTB16, PCDH1, KCNE1, DAAM2, SH2D1B, THBS1, ADGRG, FOS and several killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs). Gene enrichment analyses showed statistically significant processes related to cytokine production, immune response-regulating signaling and regulation of MAPK cascade. Top rated genes among these pathways were IL1B, IRAK3, and TLR4.

Conclusion: These findings provide preliminary valuable insights into global transcriptomic changes associated with trauma-focused psychotherapies effects in TRD patients.

The #EEGManyLabs initiative is a large-scale, international collaborative project aiming at assessing the replicability of pivotal electroencephalography (EEG) studies in the field of cognitive neuroscience (Pavlov et al., 2021). Within the framework of this initiative, the University of Brescia, together with other independent laboratories, forms a replication team dedicated to reproducing the results of a renowned study on human visual perception (Mathewson et al., 2009). The study was submitted to Peer Community In and has received in-principle acceptance (Ruzzoli et al., 2023).

According to previous literature hypothesizing that the brain samples sensory information via rhythmic variations of low and high excitability periods, Mathewson and colleagues (2009) showed that during high-power alpha activity (8-13 Hz), the detectability of visual targets depended on the phase of pre-stimulus alpha oscillations. The need to achieve the same results stems from the publication of several null findings on this topic.

Here we report only data collected at the University of Brescia. Thirty-five healthy subjects (mean age, 22±2.9 years) performed a single-session visual detection task, with stimuli presented at each individuals perceptual threshold. Participants were asked to indicate whether or not they had seen the target. The task comprised 16 blocks of 72 trials each, during which EEG data were recorded from 32 channels.

Statistical analysis revealed that in high-power alpha trials, no significant difference in hit rates was found between 'good' and 'bad' phase trials (p = 0.0578). However, our data showed that hits and misses occurred at significantly different phases of the alpha cycle (p < 0.001). These results suggest that, in the current paradigm, visual detection is phase-dependent within the alpha band, although phase angles may not be fully orthogonal.

The full significance of these data will become clear once they are integrated with findings from other replication teams of #EEGManyLabs for Mathewson et al. 2009 and analyzed through a meta-analysis.
