What are records?). I evaluate reading through vocabulary and writing. If you can writing, you can most likely read or at least show potential. I start with something light to help build relationships and classroom atmosphere. I then give the class a short story (that they must read on their own) and have them complete a written response. This captures the reading comp and allows me to double-check their writing.

Just kidding! I have students annotate the text. I want them to interact and engage with the material through academic graffiti. Write on it. Colour it. Question it. Make it yours in order to find out why it's the author's.
