Choose a legal TV show or movie and research one case it portrays. Compare the media version with the actual legal principles involved. Include your name and class in the title of your post, the body should contain your analysis of the media version compared with actual legal principles involved.

TV Case: Better Call Saul – “Namaste” (S5E4)

Jimmy McGill defends a robbery suspect by planting a lookalike at the defense table. When the eyewitness wrongly identifies the decoy, Jimmy reveals the switch, discrediting the ID and triggering a mistrial.

Legal Reality:

While clever on TV, this would be highly unethical and illegal in real life. Under ABA Model Rules 3.3 and 8.4, lawyers must not mislead the court or present false evidence. Jimmy’s tactic violates the duty of candor to the tribunal and could lead to contempt of court, sanctions, or disbarment.

Real Case Comparison:

In People v. Simac (1994), a lawyer did something similar and was found in criminal contempt for deceiving the court. Unlike the show, the real lawyer was punished and faced professional consequences.

Key Takeaway:

The show dramatizes courtroom theatrics, but such a stunt would have serious repercussions in real courts.
