Student-Made Fluency and Discussion Videos

I use Flipgrid as a tool to help me check fluency and as an opportunity for students to reflect on their own progress. Students record themselves reading a passage twice. As they listen to their first recording they make a list of at least 3 things they believe they need to improve upon. Then after recording the second video where they reread the passage the students are asked to compare their two videos and analyze their growth. Each child has their own private Flipgrid for their fluency videos.

This is tied in with a class discussion. When students are finished with their 2 fluency videos they answer a discussion question pertaining to the passage. They write their answer on paper first and then record themselves sharing their answer and any posters, drawings, or research they did with their classmates. This is done on a separate Flipgrid that is shared with the entire class. This allows the students to can view each other's discussion videos and interact with one another about their opinions and ideas.

Traditional classroom teachers are well aware of developing and using classroom routines. The same applies for online and blended learning. Use repeating patterns in your module and lesson design. Also helps you the teacher remain organized too! The human brain is wired to recognize patterns and students learn quickly to expect and follow those.
