The media portrays crime in different ways in order to capture the attention of many viewers and to build upon their fear of crime. Crime is profitable for the media and therefore they will present crime that will either be dramatised, focussing on violent crimes and the emotions of the victim. Their role in relation to crime news should be to report it the way it is and for it to be representative of the crime that is actually happening. For example we hear a lot of crime news about murder, however those crimes occur on a much smaller scale in comparison to crimes such as shoplifting, fraud or assault.

The media presents certain crimes in different ways to get the attention of readers or viewers. If the media outlets grab people's attention it also gives the media outlets attention and a profit. The media tends to dramatise and exaggerate crimes which will entice fear in individuals. I think the role of the media in relation to crime news should be to report and publish the truth about crimes and the details of these crimes that are committed not just to gain attention. They should also publish information on less serious crimes that are committed and not just the really serious ones.

The media presents crime in particular not entirely truthful ways to raise viewership due to their basic position as a business. Anything that can be presented in a way that sensationalises the story is framed to exist that way. Crime news should not be sensationalised at all if we wish for a more correct and effective criminal justice system.

The media presents crimes in particular ways to ensure the general public are lured in and focused on particular issues, the media utilising noticeable endurance skills such as dramatization, enhancing the stories strong points to develop emotion or reaction out of the viewer. Personalisation, making the story personal for specific groups or individuals reading the topic, draws the public to listen and create an overall opinion about the matter, enhancing the stories significance and value. Risk, creating a fear or moral panic to get the public to communicate the issue, enhancing its expense and worthiness in the media. There are many ways in which news editors try and approach these issues towards, in doing this a news editor can ensure a story is portrayed in anyway he/she wants, (Lapdog) producing what other people want to see, biased and prejudiced conceptions.

The media responds to crimes in a particular way to benefit those in political power. By creating an image that there are issues; they can create fear, control, manipulation and profit. 9/10 the people who report the media are under control/pay from the wealthy whom benefit from the above. They should be an independent, unbiased source of information with no ulterior objectives.
