If the water temperature of a reef gets too warm and stays too warm for over 8 weeks, it can cause the coral to bleach. This means the colorful zooxanthellae who live in the coral animal leave or die. The coral then looks white or bleached, and can no longer get food from the zooxanthellae's photosynthetic activity.
