From Jessica another service idea here specifically related to Geography in our area is involvement in local bush regeneration. The Cooks River near to us has needed many trees re-planted, service could be done in assisting in the community on a Sunday morning.

The International School of Astana is engaged in energy-saving practices such as the conservation of electricity through the use of energy-saving bulbs and bulbs with sensors such that light only appears when people are within the area. We are also recycling paper and encouraging digital learning to reduce the use of paper. Our students will soon be involved in wetlands regeneration activities within the city. We are also considering an afforestation program after winter because Nur Sultan (formerly Astana) is a very windy city and few forestry activities have taken place. This shall be done in conjunction with the local community and conservation groups.

From Valentina CAS activities that can be linked to Geography: Activity: Clean up activities Creativity: Inspiring videos on global climate protection Service: Booklets on tips for reducing air pollution I have had a conversation/interview with our coordinator regarding our CAS activities. One of our students is creating a booklet on how to play chess and other students are still working in their ideas as this is the first time for some of them.

I think with geography we are lucky as connections of CAS can be made with relative ease.

Creativity - Students could work with other students in lower grades to recycle trash - using that trash to create awareness of how much product (plastic/paper) is wasted.
Students could also create diaries to highlight how much food they waste.

Action - Students could take part in a coastal cleanup. We live in a city that sits along one of the biggest lakes in China. Time could be taken to remove trash from this area. Students could also work together to tidy the schools gardens, or opposingly, organise a wilding project in and around school.

Service - Could be to create or join a local organisation to make the previous ideas permanent. So awareness of paper, plastic and food waste can be continued into the future. Continuing a wilding project would aim to secure more bees in the area. As well as other insects.

Perhaps service and action could be intertwined here?

Luke

At my previous school we did lots of different CAS projects and they were across different subjects.
1. A group of 50 students did a 48 hour swimathon to raise money and awareness of surf living and also stay alive program which helps educate all primary school aged children in Australia to learn to swim
2. Bake off: They sold cupcakes to support to local domestic violence centre and make a video for change to demonstrate the issue and that it can 'happen to anyone'
3. Adopt a Koala: With last years bushfires in Australia the group joined a local NGO to raise awareness and create a picture book which funds raised went to the local koala shelter to help the koala population

We have had tree-planting projects supported by national charities. Students could develop this further to investigate where best to plant them, and then what has been lacking before is an after-care programme! To keep the trees alive and nurture them a bit more. Students could potentially also work with primary schools to help them plan their tree planting etc.
