Somebody- The main character is Loujain.

Wanted-Loujain wanted to learn how to fly so that she is able to see the sunflowers.

But- Loujain has a difficult time learning how to fly because there are a lot of stereotypes placed on her. Everyone kept saying that only boys were able to learn how to fly and not girls.

So- Loujain comes back home from school one day and talks to her dad about how no one is supportive of her wanting to learn how to fly and how she just wants to be able to fly and see the sunflowers.

Then- Baba, Loujain's dad, speaks to Loujain's mom about the issue that she is faced with. Baba decided to help Loujain learn how to fly. Eventually she learns how to fly by herself and is able to see the sunflowers.

Finally- Loujain was able to learn that sometimes stereotypes will be placed on you in life and that people will be against your goals. She learned that if you are hardworking and persistent enough you will be able to accomplish your goals in life.

Summary- This book is about a young girl named Loujain. The only thing that Loujain ever dreamt of is being able to fly on her own and visit the sunflowers. She would decorate the walls of her room and have sunflowers over her bed. One day at dinner Loujain looked at her dad, Baba, and told him that she wanted to learn how to fly. Baba replied by telling her that one day she will learn. Loujain got excited and the next day at school she told all of her friends and classmates that she was going to learn how to fly one day. They all ended up laughing at her and told her that flying is only meant for boys. Loujain got so upset that she ran home crying although still didn't give up. With the help of her Baba she eventually learned how to fly on her own. At the end of the book she flew over the sunflowers and finally got to see them on her own.

Social Awareness Connection

"Loujain Dreams of Sunflowers" connects well to a social awareness issue. A social issue is a problem in society that makes it hard for people to achieve their goals. The main social issue that is presented in this story is gender stereotypes. Throughout the story Loujain is told that she is not able to fly because she is a girl and it is only meant for boys. We are able to see Loujain break through this social issue. Loujain is able to get through this gender stereotype and fly on her own by the end of this story. This is inspiring for young readers and shows that anyone can accomplish their goals despite things that are said against you.

The two main characters of this book are Loujain and Baba.

Loujain is both brave and ambitious. There are a lot of stereotypes put against Loujain because she is a girl. Everyone is claiming that she will never learn how to fly because it is only meant for boys and as a result people in school laugh at her. Despite this Loujain still wants to learn how to fly so she can see the sunflowers. She doesn't give up and goes against the gender stereotypes placed on her. Eventually she learns how to fly with both bravery and ambition.

Baba is both empathetic and encouraging. Baba is there to comfort Loujain when she is upset and is also there to help teach her how to fly. Baba is encouraging by letting Loujain know that one day she will be able to fly. He is also empathetic when he is there to talk to Loujain and comfort her. Loujain would've had a harder time learning how to fly without Baba being empathetic and encouraging towards her.

I would explain that it is not nice to laugh at other people and then explain to the person who is being made fun of that sometimes people are mean but you can't let other peoples words affect you. Afterwards I would immediately bring it to my teachers attention.
