And although she had relatives in Chicago, they were too late to act on the plan to move to Chicago. Her and her family were sent to the Krakow Jewish ghetto, where she had lost two brothers fighting the Nazis.

Then, she had been marched to the Plaszow concentration camp, where she spent two-and-a-half years there until she was marched to Auschwitz. There she survived the gas chamber and testing by infamous Nazi doctor Josef Mengele. After two months, she was sent on the 'death march' where she had to walk 50 km in horrific conditions, like in -20C weather and starvation just to name a few.

From there, she was sent to Buchenwald and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps. In Belson, she had shared a barrack with Anne Frank and had cared for her right before she passed. Finally in 1945, she had been liberated and within six months, had married her husband, Norman Turgel.
