Heart of the Teacher

The beginning of this article highlights the highs and lows we experience as teachers. A classroom can feel so joyous and full of accomplishment, yet in other moments stressful and disappointing. Self reflecting on our understanding of self is the best way we can grow as individuals to better our teaching practice. A quote which spoke to me was , 'This teacher is one whom we knew when we were children but lost touch with as we grew into adulthood, a teacher who continually invites me to honor my true self—not my ego or expectations or image or role, but the self I am when all the externals are stripped away.' The last way in which I felt connected to this article was in the below citation; identity and integrity that good teaching requires, we must do something alien to academic culture: we must talk to each other about our inner lives—risky stuff in a profession that fears the personal and seeks safety in the technical, the distant, the abstract. I love how it points out to the idea of risky stuff. As teachers and even further individuals we feel vulnerable being open and exposed. However being your real authentic self is the best self you can be; mirroring to students and community members the strength, courage and relieving nature of authenticity.

The OCT Standards of Practice are what guides us teacher candidates through our educational journey.

Commitment to Students and Student learning: ensures we are putting students needs before ourself. Students are to be treated fairly and with respect while being sensitive to the things they are experiencing in their world.

Professional knowledge& Ongoing Professional Learning: ensures we are always growing and learning as teachers. We are following curriculum as well as mediating and accommodating children's needs in the most supportive manner.

Professional Practice: Maintains we are good role models within our community. As a teacher you are a teacher in absolutely every setting holding yourself with respect and kindness to anyones approach.

Leadership in Learning community: Community is a wide term. Play an active role in all that is community. In students lives, in Catholic means and in ways that will support your students educational and spiritual well being

History of Catholic Education

Personally being raised in the Catholic school system I see no other path but to be an active teaching member within the system. I do recall hearing a couple years back that catholic education was on it's way out. However I don't see this as a realistic fact. I see Catholic education as a way for children to explore who they are at the deepest of depths. It allows students to search for their meaning and relationship with God and others. Teaching children to self reflect and search for meaning is one of the biggest advantages the Catholic system allows for. One thing I have always been encouraged by is the student involvement in school masses. I look forward to taking part in an education system which put the value of other people before themselves.

Educating The Soul

Catholic schools focus on the moral growth of individuals. Educating the soul focuses on the aspect that children who are educated within the Catholic system are more giving of their time to volunteer and help others. This goodwill and nature has been instilled in them through their Catholic education. If we are not putting others before ourselves we aren't being community givers. Too often we focus on the individual through purely an educational lens, however stepping back to see the student as a developing soul is a beautiful concept. Even further those who have participated in Catholic education are more likely to put their children into the system because values and morals are cultivated alongside their academic education. There is a soul education as well as academic.

I would encourage having the parish priest come in for more frequent masses. There could be a more intimate opportunity to do mass with a single class each week, on top of group assembly masses. In fact I would take the idea of assembly out of these masses, it takes away from students understanding they are in church and to quietly reflect. Additionally I would encourage positive talk, something I'm doing within my class now where students are encouraged, modelled and motivated to say positive things to others. Additionally I would use the strategy I am now with How Full is Your Bucket.

Fully Alive Family Life Education is sponsored by the Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops which addresses, family, marriage and sexuality. I feel as it exists as a great entry point for many discussion revolving around our journey of faith. It's an excellent resource to cultivate human relationships to the guide into our relationship with God. I plan on implementing this source as a springboard but not as the entirety. I feel as though I had many questions when I was younger after reading and teachers wouldn't have much dialogue on the topic. I plan to allow for time in order to have dialogue and get to the deep seeded questions children ponder with and feel as though they can't ask.

I am currently placed in a Catholic school for my placement. Not a single day foes by where we don't open with a prayer in the morning, afternoon and at dismissal. However there is much more than this. I feel as though it's important for students to understand who they are as Catholics and how to integrate this into their daily decisions. Prayer simply isnt enough. This encouraged me to use a book called How Full Is Your Bucket where students fill a bucket at the end of the day. The place what they did or what they are going to do in order to fulfill the role of a Catholic and putting others before ourselves.

Some similarities between the mission statements are the idea of going beyond the individual as an academic learner. Living in Christ is a popular statement. Additional mind, body and soul is also recurrent in terms of themes of the mission statements. When it comes to differences there isn't much to me which stands out. They all represent living in Christ or developing the student in all divisions of embodiment. My personal Mission Statement would be something such as , Living with Christ in mind, body and spirt.
