The Tallmadge Amendment was an amendment declaring that Missouri could join the union but as a free state. The north favored this proposal because their goal was to create a nation with as many free states as possible. The south heavily protested this amendment knowing that if Missouri became a free state, they would lose the power to block anti-slavery bills and their economy would suffer.

The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state but recognized Maine as a free state, this way there were an equal amount of slave states and free states. Neither side of the nation was happy with this "agreement." The Northerners thought of their congress as traitors for allowing the compermise and the Southerners resented the ban on slavery in a part of the Louisiana Territory.

In 1831 an enslaved man and preacher named Nat Turner went from house to house with 6 other men, killing all the white people they had encountered. This event grew into a rebellion later consisting of 40 enslaved people, killing 55 white people. The south wasn't happy with this rebellion and put "slave codes" in place. These were very strict laws restricting slaves from reading, writing, and meeting without a white person present. Many Northerners thought that this rebellion was necessary to the movement but some didn't think killing was necessary and wanted to abolish slavery peacefully.

Throughout the 1830's abolishonists tried their hardest to put anti-slavery bills in place. Congress wasn't allowed to interfere with slavery in the states so abolishonists decided to challenge slave laws in the District of Colombia. Instead of trying to figure out how to answer such a question congress decided to silence abolishonists by acting on the "Gag Rule." The Gag Rule restricted abolishonists from debating in congress over slavery. This didn't stop the Northerners from retaliating and the South didn't take it well. The south didn't appreciate the Northern abolishonists "ruining" their ways of life and continued to put strict laws to control the North from stopping slavery.

The Kansas Nebraska act questioned if slavery should be allowed in the new territiories. Congress decided to let the people decide this descision whether they should allow slavery or not. Riots and violence spread rather quickly creating a time called "Bleeding Kansas." This violence also spread to congress when Senator Sumner was beaten by a can eby Rep. Preston when he made a speech against the south. The Northerners were pretty unhaooy with this considering most of the southern states would deem slavery legal. The South was pleased with this act, knowing they'd be allowed to enable slavery within their limits with as little reprocussions as they wanted.

Dred Scott lived in a free territory and sued in the Supreme Court because he thought he should no longer be considered a slave. The court not only ruled thst he was still enslaved but the court also ruled that all African Americans we're no longer considered citizens of America and didn't hold any rights what so ever. The court also ruled that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional hence proper free and slave state laws were abolished. The North was very unhappy with this and didn't think it was fair to strip all African Americans, even if they were born citizens of their citizenship and rights. The South celebrated this, this descision made it much harder for anti-slavery laws to be put in place.
