Liquid Smooth is the first song on Mitski’s 2012 album.

The song is about realizing that youth and beauty are a privilege and wanting other people to notice it in you before it vanishes. ("capture me.. or at least take my picture"—enjoy how young and beautiful I am at this moment; "I'm liquid smooth, come touch me too... my skin is plump and full of life, my blood is red and unafraid of living, I'm in my prime"—all references to how beautiful and fearless we are, almost by default, in our youth) The song's first line makes reference to how women are treated as objects rather than living things and asks what we should do with all of this beauty.
Lyrics like “I’m in my prime” “I’m at my highest peak, I’m ripe” suggest that she is talking about how women in their early 20’s are seen as more desirable.

At the end of the chorus, she says that she is “about to fall.” This lyric and the general tone of the song suggest that she is worried about aging because she will no longer fit within the beauty standards.

Liquid Smooth is one of two Mitski songs to feature a Japanese lyric (the other being First Love/Late Spring from the album Bury Me at Makeout Creek).
The lyric is "崩れてゆく前に", or, "Kuzurete yuku maeni", translating to “before I collapse/crumble/fall apart.” This lyric employs a Japanese grammar construction, “てゆく” (-teyuku) that is used to convey that the subject or original state of being will go or “leave” and won’t return, which is notable as the whole song is about the transient nature of youth and beauty.

1. How I feel this river rushing through my veins
2. I'm pulsing, my blood is red and unafraid of living
3. And feel my skin is plump and full of life
4. Biology, I am an organism, I'm chemical
That's all, that is all

I chose those lyrics because they all refer to the beauty of the body and the act of living fully and feeling alive with great health just like the song is saying : « In my prime »
« How I feel this river rushing through my veins » is my favorite because the river seems like an intense sensation that flow through our whole body and when I listen to this song I have this powerful and dramatic feeling which is hold by the tempo and the way Mistki is singing.

Why did I choose this song?

I have chosen this song because for me, the melody that builds with the lyrics during the song has a magnetic power on the mind which puts people in a transe. It makes us feel like we are at our « highest peak » and that we are beautiful, young and we want people to notice this.

The slow melody gives a feeling of laying on a cloud and let everything flow like a river in our mind which refers to the title «Liquid Smooth»
I have been listening to Mitski for quite a while now and even though her songs are all amazing and with a unique power which transports me, Liquid Smooth have all my heart and attention. This song gives confidence and makes us feel like we aren’t nothing, that even if not everyone notices you, there’s still somebody that will take a moment to look at the beautiful person that you are and tell you how much you’re magnificent.

Musical Style :

Mitski's lyrics often show her anxieties and have been described by some as 'sad indie girl music,' a category into which many women who write emotional lyrics are put.
Journalists described her as "an artist whose music feels like being ushered into a private opera house of melodrama" with lyrics full of "roiling fury, destructive impulses, humiliation, longing, heartache, and hunger" or even "really visceral
"She’s connected to a part in herself that wants to scream. Maybe you don’t live in a space where you can scream, or maybe you don’t have the words for what has happened to you. Mitski provides a space for that."

Similarly, Mitski has described her music as a place where people "can put all of their feelings, their ugliness, that doesn’t have a place in their own lives."

Public Image :

As an Asian American woman, Mitski has felt pressure to represent her community. She has expressed discomfort about the idea of people looking to her for guidance and seeing her as a leader of change in an industry dominated by white men which comes with the attention that comes with being in the public eye, therefore preferring to keep her personal life private.

She left social media in 2019, around the same time she quit music, because she felt it was unhealthy for her self-image. However, she has gained massive popularity on social media. As of February 2022, her music has been featured in over 2.5 million videos on TikTok.

Views on her fanbase :

Mitski has stated in interviews that she has an uneasy relationship with her fans because she finds their relationship to her and her music overwhelming. Her fanbase has been described as both "extremely online", "cultish"

She even described the audience at one of her shows as "Unrelenting. Everyone needed a piece of me I was so overwhelmed by hands grabbing at me that I was crying."
