Why did I choose this topic?

Being able to identify and understand parts of a story is a very important skill to teach students at early grades. I chose this topic because narratives are utilized practically every day in elementary school in ELA time so I think students need to understand how to recognize simple parts of the story like who the characters are and where the story is taking place. I also think it's a fun area of ELA because reading stories are fun and students enjoy them more so than informational text.

Drama Integrated Activities

Circle of Characters

This activity stuck out to me because it looked the most fun for kids and the teacher too. This gives students the chance to put themselves in the shoes of the character of whatever story we are reading that week and think how they would act in real life. It brings the story to life and students have to use critical thinking skills to be able to identify what character they are playing. It's a fun game for the students who are not given a character to work together to solve which student got which character. They still get to participate by guessing which student is playing what.

Story Story

This game is more of a improv game but we can make it related to this week's story. The student who is acting the character will not know who they are playing or what scene they are given so it will force them to do their best to recall what they know about the story plot and characters. It'll be a fun way to gauge how well students are actually engaging with the reading. It'll also give them some practice being in front of their classmates working on public speaking skills.

Plays

There are instances where we are given a play for our story of the week. Those are obviously the easiest to integrate drama into. Students will be assigned parts and have to read aloud when their part comes to the class. When we have those stories it is most important to emphasize voice and emotion to the kids to eliminate the robot voice they're accustomed to. A teacher can make these stories more fun by bringing the characters to the front of the room and giving them props to help them act out their part.
