As students continue to develop their narrative and dialogue writing skills, we have identified quotation marks as a key area for growth. Strengthening students’ understanding of how and when to use quotation marks will improve the clarity and structure of their writing. Continued focus on capitalization and punctuation will further support students in applying writing conventions accurately and consistently across genres.

By December, all Grade 2 students will begin every sentence with a capital letter, capitalize names, and use correct end punctuation (full stops, question marks, or exclamation points), as measured by three writing samples collected in November and assessed with the Writer’s Workshop rubric.

By the end of May, at least 70% of Grade 2 students will demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of quotation marks and accurately use them in their writing. Progress will be measured through three writing samples collected in March, April, and May. We will also continue to strengthen students’ consistent use of capitalization and punctuation conventions during this time.
