This digital anthology explores how identity is shaped by performance, perception, and self-expression. Each piece—film, poem, podcast, or essay—asks: Are we who we are, or who we pretend to be?

Identity is more than who we are—it's also who we perform to be.
In this anthology, you'll explore characters and real people who wear masks, hide truths, or try to fit in. Sometimes, they discover who they truly are. Other times, they stay lost in performance.
Let's explore: What happens when your true self is different from the self the world wants to see?

Summary:
This film tells the story of Truman Burbank, a man who lives in a perfect town with perfect people—but he doesn’t know it’s all fake. Everyone in his life is an actor, and his entire world is a massive reality TV set. As Truman starts to notice strange things happening, he begins to question everything. He eventually realizes that his life has been a performance created by others, and he decides to escape to find out who he really is.

Reflection on Identity:
Truman's story is a clear example of performing identity. For most of his life, Truman doesn’t know he’s pretending—he’s just living what he thinks is real. But everything around him is fake, and the people in his life are performing roles. Once Truman realizes this, he starts searching for his true identity. This shows how people can live fake versions of themselves when they’re surrounded by lies or controlled by others, and how scary but powerful it is to choose to be real.

Summary:
In this poem, a Black college student is asked to write a page that tells the truth about who he is. As he writes, he thinks about how his identity is shaped by both his experiences and the world around him. He wonders if being honest about who he is will make his writing true. The poem mixes personal thoughts with questions about race, truth, and how we define ourselves.

Reflection on Identity:
This poem connects deeply to the idea of performing identity. The speaker wants to be real and honest, but he also knows that people might see him differently because of his race. He is aware that he might feel pressure to write what others expect. This shows how even something simple, like a school assignment, can force someone to choose between who they are and who they think they need to be. It’s about the conflict between your inner self and the version of yourself that you show to the world.

Summary:
In this movie, Barbie starts out living in a world where everything is perfect. She’s happy, beautiful, and everyone loves her. But when things begin to go wrong, like thinking about death or feeling insecure, Barbie leaves her perfect world and enters the real one. There, she learns that being "perfect" isn’t the same as being real. She meets people who help her understand emotions, purpose, and what it means to be human.

Reflection on Identity:
Barbie’s journey is all about performing identity. At first, she plays the role of the perfect doll, smiling, confident, and flawless, but it’s all fake. As she starts to feel real emotions, she questions her role. Her choice to leave the fake world and explore who she really is shows how people sometimes hide behind a mask to fit in. The film teaches that it’s okay to be imperfect, and that finding your real identity often means letting go of the role you’ve been playing.

Summary:
This podcast episode talks about how some people of colour feel like they aren’t “Black enough,” “Latino enough,” or don’t fully belong to their own culture. They might not speak the language fluently, enjoy certain traditions, or fit the stereotypes people expect. This can make them feel like impostors in their own communities. The episode shares personal stories and looks at why this happens.

Reflection on Identity:
This connects to performing identity because these individuals feel pressure to act a certain way to prove they "belong." It shows that people sometimes feel forced to pretend or hide parts of themselves, even in their own culture, just to be accepted. The podcast helps us see how identity isn’t always about what’s inside you, but about how others expect you to act. It reminds us how hard it can be to be real when you feel like you don’t fit the role.

Summary:

In this famous TED Talk, Adichie talks about how people are often judged by only one part of their identity. For example, people might only think of Africans as poor, or immigrants as helpless. When we only hear one story about someone, we start to believe that’s all they are. Adichie shares personal experiences and explains how hearing many stories gives a fuller picture of who people really are.

Reflection on Identity:
This TED Talk shows that people are often pushed to perform just one version of themselves, the version others expect. When only one story is told about a group of people, it becomes harder for them to be seen as full human beings. This talk reminds us that people are complex, and they shouldn’t have to fit into a single role or identity. It connects to the theme by showing how dangerous it is when we’re forced to perform only one version of ourselves.
