How did the Great Depression personally affect lower and middle class Americans?

One of the outcomes of the Great Depression that personally affected lower and middle class Americans was that the unemployment rate rose, leaving many lower and middle class Americans with no source of income. One of the effects of this period was the physical and mental health of people. One piece of text from Life and Death during the Great Depression that I found very significant was "...suicide mortality increased during the Great Depression." With no money many people generated a melancholic mindset because they couldn't find a job to provide for themselves, or even their families, and if they found a job they would barley make it by because of the very poor wage.

What are the long lasting effects of The Great Depression?

One of the long-lasting effects of the Great depression was on American economy. More than half of the banks failed, and depositors lost hundreds of millions of dollars. The stock market was greatly impacted as well. "Between their peak in September and their low in November, U.S. stock prices declined 33 percent." This quote from Encyclopedia Britannica shows the steep decline in the value of stocks, and over the next 2 years, the stock market lost 90% of its value. It would not recover for the next 25 years. Along with this, international trade decreased by over 3 billion USD, and would not recover for many years afterwards. The resolution of the Depression and the New Deal brought many long-term effects as well. Americans became more trusting of the Federal Government and believed the Government could help them out of financial crises. Along with this, many iconic American landmarks were created as a result of the New Deal, and 3 entire towns were created. This is the way the Great Depression had a lasting effect on America.

The Great Depression affected the culture of the United states in many ways. To begin with, the WPA, or Works Progress Administration, had a great affect on American culture. The WPA initially had the goal of increasing American unity and identity through art and culture during the struggles of the Great Depression. This administration employed thousands of artists to create American art, which was necessary for the artists to make a living and accomplished the goal of creating a sense of national unity and identity. Artist's created many different styles throughout America, as the WPA encouraged regional identities among artists. "By cultivating each region's differences and strongly insisting artists create within the boundaries of their geographic location's characteristics, the WPA indirectly helped lead to the construction, distribution, and subsequent democratization of American culture." This quote from The Art of the Great Depression shows hoe artists created differing styles throughout America, but all these styles together created a unique American culture.

Another one of the outcomes of the Great Depression that personally affected the lower and middle class Americans was the life expectancy during that time. With the unemployment rate so slow people didn't have enough money to properly clean themselves so their hygiene fell behind. What came out of the lack of cleanliness was a numerous amount of diseases that spread. Because many people had little to no work wages they could not afford the best medical treatments for diseases that spread during this era. One supportive statistic that I found from Life and Death during the Great Depression was "...cardiovascular and tuberculosis mortality reveal peaks in 1926, 1928, and especially 1936, coinciding with economic expansions."

Another way the Great Depression affected culture was in theater and writing. While many artists and actor were influenced by government mandates and requirements, others portrayed a more accurate image of America during the Great Depression. The theatrical group named Group Theater portrayed relevant scenes through realistic and socially relative acting styles. The Group became a prominent theatrical company that portrayed the sentiments of many middle and lower class Americans. Along with this, "the social consciousness of the theater was duplicated in some of the widely read novels of the 1930s." This quote from Encyclopedia Britannica shows how the relevance of some theatrical troupes also influenced many novelists. The loss of hope and resources was a theme many novelists captured in their stories. Many of these works of art were more relatable to the masses and better captured the image of the Great Depression.

Another long-lasting effect of the great depression was the psychological and political effects on America. The experiences of the Great Depression "helped forge the social beliefs and attitudes that sustained a political system for many years." The Depression made Americans less sure of the stability of pure capitalism, and caused many Americans to believe that other options could be better than Capitalism. Along with this, the U.S. debt increased as politicians began to fear causing another depression. Politicians would not cut back government spending, as this would cause the depression to re-emerge. These are the main effects of the depression on the psychology and politics in America.
