The Advocacy Issue-Mental Health in High School

The American Pyschological Association (APA) reports that 81% of Gen Z teens have experience more intense stress during the COVID-19 pandemic (APA,2020). Teens as well as children have had to adapt to being away from school and distancing themselves from others with practically no warning. On top of social distancing, students have had to abruptly prepare to learn online. It has been said that some students do well online but there are also students who need physical one on one help and that did not happen during COVID. Since there is not a manual to help solve the gap in learning, mental health disparities and so many areas, the duty falls into the lap of the school counselor as well as other leaders to improve the quality of life for the students as best as possible.

Teach One Reach One address the mental challenges through mindfulness and meditation as well workshops that teach how to use the techniques to become a better person. Students have already learned how to cope with anxiety or depression so teaching them practical tools can give them a better outlet instead of shouting down or having behavioral issues. "A new study suggests that mindfulness education — lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body — can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students’ ability to stay engaged, helping them stay on track academically and avoid behavior problems" (Harvard School of Education, 2019).
