They were not, findings show swords better than swords fine else were in Europe a decade later. So the well fit had very good swords and ether a very harden leather or chain armour and of course the Viking shield. Most Vikings had tree close combat weapons; a sword, a battel axe/ throwing axe and a knife, and they usely stored one or two in the boats. 
Harald Hardrada had and army of a little more then 15 000 of the best men and 300 longboats, the sailed from south of Norway to north of England.

Many sad he was cocky, he had gone on many plunders before, but they almost gave up before the attack stared, and the Vikings was able to just take what they wanted and run back, so more equipment will do the plunder slower.

Although the berserks were able to take out many of the strongly armoured knights, the rest of the Vikings failed to defend them from the rain of arrows and no shield they probably left in the longboats. The Vikings were more skilled but were very outnumbered by the knights, but not before Harald took an arrow the knee and throat, he died and Vikings commander and warlord was lost.

Before this the Vikings held there on agents the knights, due to the far better expiries, without him the Vikings stopped for an second and started doubted themselves leading to the knights taking out the Vikings, after the main part of the Vikings were killed by the knights, they only needed to run over sea of dead bodies and attack the rest of the Vikings on the other side of the river.

Leading historians to believe they were abbot 120 knights lest after killing 15 000 Vikings, resulting in a close match. This shows that the Vikings could have beaten the knights with a good margin, have they had they had there shield and there arrow blocking armour.
