What is Transmission?

Transmission is a powerful element used in music. As Ratliff says in chapter four, it leaves the listeners with more than they expected when they first played the song of their choice. Transmission leaves a story behind in the songs and the story intensifies from beginning to end whether it be from the tone of the artists, or how they are actually using their lyrics. Sometimes it even gives the audience information (experiences, problems, etc.) about the artist that they were not even expecting. Many people like listening to songs based off of their moods. If they are happy then they play upbeat music, if they are sad then they play slow melancholic music. From personal experience, when I listen to sad/emotional songs, I pay attention to the lyrics more and the meaning of the song. This makes it more relatable of course, but I find myself learning that the composer is going through a tribulation as well. I can tell because they emphasize their notes on specific lines.

Agree or Disagree?

I agree with Ratliff's argument of transmission simply because when I listen to music, I pay attention to how artists manipulate the tone of the different words in their songs to give the listeners a certain type of emotion. Sometimes it leaves the listeners wondering if the artists have been through the same thing they have if not even worse, so when Ratliff states what I have typed in the bottom quote to the left of this box, this is the power that I believe he is talking about. Everyone lives with different emotions everyday whether they like it or not and music has that power to let people know that they are not alone and it leads them to know that even the artists go through things; to me that power is something that is unmatched.

Furthest Thing-Drake

This is an example from Ratliff's playlist that I believe has good transmission. This is a song about Drake singing to a girl about how he has been unfaithful to her. He is not able to come home to her because of his music career, however when he is away from home, he feels the urge to drink, smoke, and have intimate relations with others. He then goes on to say that he's not perfect like everyone else he knows and wants forgiveness. One part of the song he states "girl you know that I remember, don't be a pretender" and holds his note on the word "know" simply because he knows the his ex-girlfriend will always remember the memories they had no matter how hard she tries to forget. This exemplifies Ratliff's music concept because Drake leaves his listeners a story about his past life that they were not expecting and this experience that he had is actually very common with artists in today's generation.

In My Mind-Heather Headley

In this specific song, Headley constantly holds high pitched notes on three specific words throughout her whole song which is "In my mind..." She does this because she is telling a story about a break up she had with her lover, but she will always be his in her mind. It is an intensifying story and she does an amazing job of showing this by changing the tone in her voice. She leaves her listeners with the questioning of if she got back together with her lover, and if not does she still think that about him. It is just so many unanswered questions left behind in this song and so many different emotions. This is definitely another example of
