An ALPHA BIAS occurs when a theory assumes there are real and enduring differences between cultural groups, for example assuming that individualistic cultures are less conformist. 
A BETA BIAS occurs when a theory ignores or minimises cultural differences by assuming people are the same, for example using a Western Intelligence test for all cultures.

To deal with culture bias, studies can use samples from different culture groups. Smith and Bond surveyed a European textbook on social psychology and found that 66% of studies were American, 32% European and 2% from the rest of the world. Henrich et al calculated that a randomly selected American student was 4000 times more likely to be a participant in a psychology study than a non-westerner.
