Shelby Lee work mostly with Black-and-White photograph. It allows the picture to liberate its emotions without the loudness of colors. He photographed his subjects with an accent on the non pretty beauty of their day-to-day life. He wanted to capture real life moment, authentic moment. Nothing is stage and it is the beauty of his art. As we can see in this picture, we can imagine that it is the reality of the people in the picture. The chopped head with the skin hanging are not there to promote beauty, there are detail representing the real life of those in the picture.

My favorite thing about this artist his the authenticity of his work. Right before the 20th centurary, the artists were painting and creating sculpture. They were very concentrated on making every detail perfect. The style of Shelby Lee gave a fresh perspective of art and people like it. As we can see in this picture, there is no second though while capturing this moment. It is simply childrends in their environment. ‘’Adams considers his subjects his friends, which no doubt lends a level of comfort to the shooting sessions, as they face his large camera.’’ (Alicia Josten)

Shelby Lee Adams is a remarkable artist because he was able to create this atmosphere almost as if the picture was taken by a member of the family. It allows us to almost travel with him to his destination. Usually, I found picture very award as if people did not feel comfortable, but Shelby Lee made people comfortable and it is the beauty of his work. He wanted to show the really of the poverty of Appalachia. No filter, no color, only expression and decor. For me personally, I love when artists are not trying to stage of make everything perfect. I love when you feel the reality of the people captured.
