Wollongong: we need to talk about ducks

We have a campus problem with ducks that have become aggressive in stealing food from students. At first they seemed cute because, you know, ducks. But I've sat in this food hall area watching them grab food from tables. They're big ducks. And no one quite knows what to do. This is especially a problem with international students as no one wants to hear that a student went home from Australia with a story of being attacked by a duck. (this image is from a tweet shared by first year student @teskanas) -- Kate

The Duck Pond lawn at UOW is a delightful open grass space frequented by students (and, of course, those feathered, fiery food snatchers) wishing to kick back and relax in the sun. Located near the library and surrounded on one side by towering eucalyptus trees, the Duck Pond lawn is also used for events and special occasions such as graduation days.

Each time I pass by this lovely spot, I am pleasantly reminded of a photo that was taken there on my Dad’s graduation day in May 1986. The photo (shown below, with permission), features my Pop, great-grandmother, Dad and Nan. I love this photo because it reveals a rich history to UOW which, for many years, seemed to have been disguised under a marketing campaign promoting a modern and youthful university image.

Perhaps I have such a strong affinity and fondness for the Duck Pond lawn because it connects me to my own family history. In a weird way, the Duck Pond lawn acts as a symbol of educational achievement in my family, both over time and across generations. While UOW has endured many changes since the 1980s, the Duck Pond lawn remains much the same. Next month, some thirty years later, I too will be donning UOW’s royal blue cape, standing with my family on the Duck Pond lawn and reflecting on the proud UOW heritage that unites our educational journeys.

- Giverny

Waves!!!
I'm a non-traditional student at a (2 year) Community College in Oakland, California. I'm retired and have never been to Australia but Wikipedia says Wollongong is an industrial and port town not unlike Oakland.
Today's politics has taken me back to my high school and college days when Richard Nixon was the 1st American President to resign in disgrace. I grew up in Nixon's home town near Los Angeles and enjoyed political comedy by The Firesign Theater on the radio and Monty Python's Flying Circus on TV. I found this Australian TV comedy show from the first day of Australia's nationwide color television broadcasting. This clip reminds me of the scene from The Wizard of Oz where the movie transitions from black and white to color.
Do students at Wollongong University know about Aunty Jack from their grandparents?

Chris Tucker was great, but what I loved more than anything was the one on one time I had with my dad. I enjoyed just seeing him laugh.

Fifteen years or so after I left my undergraduate state college, never returning for any special events or keeping any ties to the place, I returned only when my son had a basketball tournament on campus. We live about two hours away. It was so strange to come into the campus of my college youth because most of the buildings were now gone, replaced with new ones, high rises, as the campus became the focus state's efforts to boost the region through the university as the economic engine. I felt so out of place, as if I had taken the wrong exit off the highway. What I noticed was that I saw a shadow campus -- what I remembered -- with the new campus -- what now existed -- and wandered around, searching for something to ground my memory, something to place me here. I never did find it. My "city" was gone. My son didn't know what the fuss was, as I pointed out landmarks that no longer existed, but he is still in high school. His days of college experiences are still ahead.

I’m part of the mature age crowd… which basically means I’m mostly the only thirtysomething in a sea of eighteen-year-olds, which is challenging and awesome all at once.

One of the best times I had on campus was when I wasn't even a student. As an alumni ( I went to Kean for Undergrad and now Grad) I came back to campus for the most unbelievable concert ever. It was unbelievable because the tickets were only $25. But I knew the Student Council president so I was able to have front row tickets for free. At this concert I saw three of my favorite Neo-Soul artists live and in living color. Chrisette Michelle, Marsha Ambrosias and Musiq Soulchild. He's my favorite. My wedding CD was filled with his songs. My husband and I had our first dance to a Musiq Soulchild song. This was such an incredible experience. One that I never would've imagined experiencing on a college campus... and it was free.

I remember walking this lonely stretch of main campus in my freshman year and thinking, "I can't do this. I should've gone to Chicago, to SAIC. Art school. Taken the risk elsewhere. But, then, maybe college isn't for me. I'm not like the people here. And, traveling to campus is so rough. I might as well drop-out. I'm not going to do anything worthwhile here and, surely, nothing worthwhile will get done because of me." Yeah.... That first year, I was hard on myself. Like, killer killer.

But, you know what?

I kept coming back. Didn't drop-out. Aced my exams. Did my work. Made it onto the Dean's List--every semester so far.

Met some cool people (some less cool, too, but that's what resting b*tch face if for). Made some good friends--other students and faculty. Found some places on campus to curl up with a good book. Took some art classes.

Now.

Now, I walk this stretch of once-abysmal sidewalk to my job on-campus--at the Writing Center. To the library, to see my librarian friend (who loves and appreciates horror and spookiness as much as me~)

I take this route, sometimes, on my way to a club meeting--for metals and jewelry-making which is a passion I discovered in the course of all that earlier, emotional mayhem. <del>Turns out adding art into the mix makes things </del><del>better</del><del>?</del> A friend I made on campus actually told me about Kean's metals program and recommended I try it out. I'm so glad I did.

I've got minors in Art History + Fine Arts (specialization in metals/jewelry-making!) to add to my degree in Writing Studies. ^.^

I walk this stretch now, too, with friends to the train station. Often, we ride together. I've moved a few times since I began university and I still have some tough travel days but they're just bad days. Not anything indicative of a bad life or bad life choices. <del>Just good ol' NJ Transit--the picture of efficiency and convenience.</del>

*Excuse me, I got to go grab my eyes from where they rolled down the hall.....*

Anyway, long story short, I'm grateful this path that once made me so uncertain of myself has now become a grounding force. Don't know what more I could ask for.

(......Well, lower tuition for starters....and trolley service to the train station.....less-sad fruit cups at Starbucks... and, uhm, having more than 1 working stall in the library ladies' room would be nice.....just saying ;)

~Kelli

I'll be honest - trying to think of a place at Kean associated with a (positive) memory has been pretty rough, and that's not me trying to demean the university itself. This past school year has been one of the toughest transitions I've ever gone through in my life. Even though I'm originally from New Jersey, I spent the last four years in Erie, Pennsylvania at Mercyhurst University for my undergrad, and loved every second being there. When I decided to come to Kean, I thought I would be okay - after all, I was back in Jersey, so there was some familiarity... right? I was really, really wrong. I've never experienced homesickness in my life before until that first month I was at Kean and dreaming of dreary Erie, and I wanted to kick myself in the face for being a nostalgic sap, but sometimes you can't help it. Kean is a really big school, compared to what I'm used to, and I feel like I rarely see the same face twice. To add, I live on campus, and most of the students here commute, so it's been hard for me to make friends in my free time.

However, there is one spot on campus where I feel at home, centered, and a sense of belonging, which is inside the office of the Kean University Writing Project, which I am the Graduate Assistant for. The office is small but has a lovely window that overlooks the pathways outside, and makes for a great space for my introverted self. It's the only spot where I feel a sense of purpose and where I'm not out of place.

- Hailey

From clicking around, it seems that the university's primary focus is jobs and preparing students to go out into the working world.
As for research, it looks like you have a wonderful library and I'd love to check it out!
It stood out to me that there doesn't seem to be a Student Life tab on the website. On the website of every U.S. college I looked at, a predominant feature is what the school has to offer in terms of student activities. I didn't get this on the UOW website. Is that the case? Is the less valued in other parts of the world?
-Marissa

I went away for my undergraduate degree, to a tiny school in Western P.A., Grove City College. The most I knew about Kean was the glimpse of the dorm buildings that are just barely visible through the trees at the end of my street.
The first time I walked on campus, I was amazed. I've lived so close for so long, and was never aware of the campus home that exists here. When you drive by, Kean seems small, but when you walk on campus it's almost like a TARDIS-- bigger on the inside.
I took this picture one beautiful day from the top floor of one of the new buildings on campus and, although Kean isn't my beloved undergrad, I think it's a pretty cool place.

Diverse and Well-funded? From what I’ve viewed/read, the initial video provided, the campus sounds quite diverse/multicultural given all the visuals and statistics. I assume that the campus takes great pride in that quality and tries to convey that fact in certain ways. Like any college it would seem that Wollongong is quite well-equipped and geared toward preparing its students for the working world. Doesn’t look to be any shortage of reading material in your library (always a good thing). I'm sure that you all have a lot of resources, both inanimate and human, but, of course, a college experience is what you make of it, as well as how much time and dedication you invest.

To be quite honest, this photo is very unflattering to me, and it might have you wondering how a doorway can explain what Kean is really like. Well, let me tell you.

For about a year and a half I went to the University of New Haven in West Haven, CT. I was a music major, and before I left, I switched my major to English. I had my mind set to go to Ramapo College in Mahwah, NJ, but they wanted to hold me back for ridiculous reasons and was only going to accept 23 of my 50 credits at the time. So, I lost my $200 housing deposit and drove all the way there with my mother and sister to withdraw from all of my classes and cancel any pending paperwork. After that, and in the same day, I researched English programs. Kean was one of the first schools (proximity wise) that popped up, and I was immediately brought back to the day I blatantly said to my guidance counselor that I wasn't planning on adding Kean to my potential college list during my junior year of high school.

If I am going to be transparent with you... I did not choose Kean. I fell flat out on my my face into what is Kean University because I would have been out of school for a semester and/or a year trying to get my life together. I was for sure that other schools would tell me that there is nothing that could be done. This picture you see below housed the office of the now retired Dr. Daniel O'Day. This man single handedly changed my entire life in one afternoon.... It was past the deadline for entry into the Spring semester as my mother and I waited outside of this office for about an hour (or more); Dr. O'Day was dealing with other students first and had asked us to stay. He finally opened the door to a desolate hallway, standing just about my height (5'2") in his taupe colored suit with his glasses and grey hair. After talking in his office about my goals and what I wanted to major in, he walked me all around this campus until he could find the individuals he was looking for. We finally reached a classroom where it seemed prospective students were registering for their classes for the first time. Rosa Cameli approached us, and I stood behind Dr. O'Day as he explained my situation. She handed my crumpled unofficial transcript to Mr. Worlds and he promptly turned and said "let her in".

I felt lost and helpless when I walked into that building that day because I didn't know what state I was going to come out of it in. When I tell you I owe everything to Dr. O'Day I truly mean it. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have had the chance for my professor (who is now my boss) to tell me that she thinks I would make a great writing consultant. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have had the chance for that same professor and boss to rehire me as a graduate assistant making my entire master's degree free. If it wasn't for him, I have no idea what my life would be like, and where I would be in this moment as I type this. In the spirit of transparency there is a lot at this school that I would like to forget as many students feel about their respective colleges and universities just because such is life, but this university literally is my saving grace. When I reflect on the people that I have come to know, the lessons that I now have ingrained in my mind, and the communities that have been built, I cannot help but to cry and think... if it wasn't for him. I owe my entire educational foundation to a select few here at Kean who have absolutely turned my life around; those individuals have contributed to my life in monumental ways and have had a hand in helping me grow into the young woman that I am today.

So when I am asked what Kean is for me... what it is really like, I have to say that it is home and it sticks to me indubitably and forever.

Peace,
Richonda

I'm a transfer student who has been at Kean university for 3 years now. It's one more year than I would have liked, but I changed my major, so I should expect the consequences. What I'm going to tell you about Kean is that it's what you make of it. Like any other school, you have resources at your disposal, some that are more outspoken that you don't have to do research or do some legwork to find out about some hidden opportunities. There have been a number of teachers here that have rubbed off on me and given me a new perspective on life, as well as how I perform on my work. I would have to say that one of my most memorible moments at Kean was not something that occurred in a classroom, but in a dorm. When I was started at Kean I dormed, and for reasons I won't go into, I moved out of my initial room in Sozio Hall and into a dorm in the New Upperclassmen Hall. It was there that I was introduced to my new roommate, who at the time I didn't know it, but as time went by I realized we had a lot in common. Our friendship flourished in that building and every so often when I pass it a small feeling of positivity rushes through me. Honestly, it's the people at the campus that have made my experiences and time here worthwhile. It really is the people that you know. You have to be outgoing to a certain degree to get the full college experience.

{ripped from my blog post ehehe...}
Kean's campus is gorgeous. Most of my tuition probably goes to gardening, to be honest. Which is why everyone throws a hissy-fit when you step foot on the grass. God forbid a blade of grass is bent. </salt> But really, I love the trees (willows, my favorites) and the winding paths dotted with patches of mulch-strewn accent gardens… It’s so… outdoorsy. God, it’s gorgeous in the fall. And the spring. Winter? It’s kinda abysmal. *shrug*

I’ve had a lot of random, sporadic, memorable moments at the gazebo in this picture. When I first toured the campus, I mentioned that I would hang out there all the time because a) it’s a pretty spot, and b) it seems like the cliché college hangout spot. One time, I met up with high school friends who’d gone to my uni with me. Another time, back in the stone age of when I was a music ed major still, I tried practicing my flute out there. That lasted about thirty seconds before self-consciousness crept in and I fled the scene. Sigh. Ha… And another time, my anime club met out there. It was the first day of the semester, so we did intros and stuff. That was a fun time. I don’t go to anime club anymore, really… It’s kinda sad, but… I dunno, I’m fine without it, I guess. Go figure. And now, most recently, I took pics there for LinkedIn (hence the fancy pose...). Ha. Adult things.

Anyway. It feels like I’ve kind of come full circle. I suppose that’s fitting, considering I’m nearing the end of my undergraduate career. Still got a year to go yet, but it’s been nice to reflect on how much has changed.

Heh… it’s funny, how something (a place, an object, maybe even a person) can just quietly exist in your life without you ever really noticing it. Then, when you look back on said thing, you realize that there are a lot of good memories that are attached to it, and can’t really help but smile.

--Masooch
