When I was young I had always loved music, playing the violin in my early twenties I thought I would be a musician. In school I became drawn to all sorts of philosophy and psychology. I studied psychology at the University of Würzburg and in 1904 invented a lie detector. I studied the psychology of courtroom testimony but then veered off to the brain as a whole.

I had all focus on the mind and started my studies with the phi phenomenon and worked with two assistants, Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka. I created Psychologische Forschung, which was a journal of my ideas and the progress I’ve made. I came to continue my research in America after fleeing Germany when the Nazis were taking power. I now live in New York as a professor.
