The Gallipoli invasion was a major defeat for the Allies during WW1. It went from February 15, 1915, to Jan 9, 1916. British casualties were around 120,000. The French incurred 27,000 casualties and a Turkish figure, while uncertain, is thought to be over 220,000.

British signals intelligence intercepted and decrypted a coded German telegram from German Foreign Secretary Arthur Zimmermann that was intended for Germany's ambassador to Mexico. This was supposed to pit Mexico against the United States.

Sinking of the Lusitania - May 7, 1915
