The gods within the Euphrates wanted to create a flood because they were unhappy with the current population. The god Ea told the mortal Utnapishtim to tear down his house, build a ship, abandon his work, and save himself from the detrimental flood. He told the people of Shurrapak he was leaving for a different reason, and gathered his family, animals, and a craftsman and navigator into the ship. When the flood hit, Utnapishtim and the people he saved survived, while everything else in society was destroyed and killed. Then, Enlil came down and gifted Utnapishtim and his wife with immortality.

The story of the flood the wiped out the city of shuruppak is similar to the story or noah's arch known commonly from the bible. The great flood was similar to Noah's arch through the fact that they were both about how the gods and or god decided that the people living down on earth were not worthy enough to live, so in order to cleanse them they sent a flood down that wiped out the human race . They left the surface in ruins except for one male, a female, and a male and female of every animal species so that they may reproduce. In this way the flood in the book gilgamesh relates to the biblical reference of noah's arch.
