         <description><![CDATA[<div>Kroll's Stages<br><br>-Preparation- Up to 6 years- Basic motor skills are acquired alongside some principles of spelling.<br><br>-Consolidation- 7/8- Writing is similiar to spoken language (including a more casual, colloquial register, unfinished sentences and strings of clauses joined by the conjunction 'and').<br><br>-Differentiation- 9/10- Awareness of writing as separate from speech emerges. A stronger understanding of writing for different audiences and purposes is evident and becomes more automatic.<br><br>Integration- Mid-teens- This stage heralds the 'personal voice' in writing and is characterised by evidence of controlled writing, with appropriate linguistic choices being made consistently.<br><br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Scribbling- Random marks on the page not related to letters or words. Practising fine motor skills.<br><br>2. Mock handwriting-Practising drawing shapes on paper, not recognisable in terms of what shapes represent.<br><br>3. Mock letters- Production of random letters. No awareness of spacing or matching sounds with symbols.<br><br>4. Conventional letters- Beginning to match sounds with symbols; writing down letters which match sounds being heard or spoken. Words unlikely to be spaced out. Start using initial consonants to represent whole words.<br><br>5. Invented spelling- Most words are spelt phonetically; simple and familiar words may be spelled correctly.<br><br>6. Appropriate spelling- Sentences become more complex. Awareness of spelling patterns.<br><br>7. Correct spelling- Most words are spelled correctly.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Insertion- adding extra letters.<br><br>Omission- leaving out letters.<br><br>Substitution- substituting one letter for another.<br><br>Transposition- reversing the correct order of letters in words.<br><br>Phonetic spelling- using sound awareness to guess letters and combinations of letters.<br><br>Salient (key) sounds- writing only the key sounds.</div>]]></description>
