One was a highly destructive steam explosion from the vaporizing super-heated cooling water; the other explosion could have been another steam explosion or a small nuclear explosion, akin to a nuclear fizzle. This was immediately followed by an open-air reactor core fire that released considerable airborne radioactive contamination for about nine days that precipitated.

Experts estimate Chernobyl could be habitable again anywhere from 20 to several hundreds of years.

Edmond Becquerel discovered the "photovoltaic effect", that allowed the conversion of sunlight to solar electric energy. This discovery then led to the invention in 1893 by Charles Fritts of the first genuine solar cell formed by coating sheets of selenium with a thin layer of gold. And this lead to the beggining of the formation of the device we know today as the solar panel.

Russel Ohl, an American inventor on the payroll of Bell Laboratories, patented the world's first silicon solar cell in 1941. This led to the production of the first solar panel in 1954 by the same company. Solar panels found their first mainstream use in space satellites. For most people, the first solar panel in their life was probably embedded in their new calculator.

TIDAL ENERGY

Tidal energy is a renewable energy powered by the natural rise and fall of ocean tides and currents (Tides are very long-period waves that move through the oceans in response to the forces exerted by the moon and sun. Tides originate in the oceans and progress toward the coastlines where they appear as the regular rise and fall of the sea surface.). During the 20th century, engineers developed ways to use tidal movement to generate electricity in areas where there is a significant tidal range, the difference in area between high tide and low tide. All methods use special generators to convert tidal energy into electricity. The kinetic energy from the natural rise and fall of tides is harnessed and converted into electricity.
